Chapter 15 - THE ACCOUNT BEFORE THE THEFT

Account 9826 belonged to the Wentworth Family Settlement Reserve.

Margaret recognized the structure, not the account.

“It was supposed to be closed after Thomas died.”

“How much should have been in it?” I asked.

“Approximately fourteen million.”

The room went silent.

Daniel requested archived trustee statements.

The answer arrived through legitimate records, not a surprise confession.

Four years earlier, Thomas Wentworth created the reserve while negotiating a family business restructuring.

After his death, the funds were supposed to return to the main trust.

They never did.

Instead, the account remained open.

Control changed.

The listed authorized representative became Charles.

Then, fourteen months later, Vanessa was added.

The $14.3 million balance had existed before the newer theft.

That changed motive again.

Vanessa wasn’t desperately stealing because she had suddenly lost money.

She had been sitting beside hidden family assets for years.

The later transfers were likely being used to service obligations connected to whatever she had done with those assets.

Margaret looked sick.

“I signed the closure reconciliation.”

Austin stared at her.

“So somebody gave you false proof the account was closed.”

“Yes.”

“Who submitted it?”

She searched the archived file.

Julian Price.

The supposedly junior finance executive had been inside the scheme far earlier than any of us realized.

Then came the betrayal we didn’t expect.

The villa’s household manager, Susan Hale, attempted to remove a locked document case from Austin’s study.

Security stopped her at the door.

I found her crying beside the dining room table.

Austin stood across from her.

“What did Vanessa offer you?”

Susan shook her head violently.

“Nothing.”

“Then why were you taking documents?”

“She said if I didn’t, she’d hurt Lily.”

Every muscle in Austin’s body went rigid.

Susan covered her face.

“She knew where Lily sleeps. Her nap times. Which playground she uses. She sent photographs.”

I sat beside Susan.

“Show me.”

Her phone contained three images.

Lily in the garden.

Lily beside the kitchen.

Lily asleep in her stroller.

All taken from within the property.

Vanessa had been building fear long before the pool.

Susan admitted she had deleted one local camera index at Vanessa’s demand.

But she had not known about Austin’s mirrored server.

Her betrayal cost us local timestamps.

Her confession gave us something more important.

Vanessa had instructed her specifically to remove a blue document envelope from Austin’s study.

Security opened Susan’s case.

The envelope was still there.

Inside was not trust paperwork.

It was Thomas Wentworth’s original handwriting sample file—letters, signed notes, personal cards—the material an expert would use to authenticate or disprove the codicil.

Vanessa had tried to make the comparison evidence disappear.

Not the codicil.

The evidence that could expose it.

At the bottom of Susan’s phone was one more message from Vanessa.

Do this before Irene sees the blue envelope.

I looked at Austin.

“She knows exactly what can prove the forgery.”

And this time Vanessa had used our daughter to try to destroy it.

📖 Vanessa’s threats against Lily exposed how far she would go, while the recovered blue envelope gave us the first real tool to attack her forged inheritance document. 👇
