Chapter 18 - JULIAN’S PRICE

Julian did not receive immunity because he asked for it.

That was the first thing the attorneys made clear.

He could offer information.

Prosecutors could evaluate cooperation.

Nothing more.

No magical deal.

No instant freedom.

Julian’s lawyer arranged a proffer meeting.

I did not attend.

Neither did Austin.

But our civil counsel received information afterward that could legally be shared.

Julian admitted helping disguise transfers.

He admitted creating beneficiary-delay scenarios.

He admitted using Austin’s old authorizations to make later payments appear routine.

He denied knowing Vanessa would physically shove me.

That distinction mattered to him.

“He says ‘physical incident’ was Vanessa’s language,” Daniel explained.

“Was it?”

“The metadata supports that she added the line.”

“But he kept it.”

“Yes.”

“He helped her plan around it.”

“Yes.”

Julian was not a frightened innocent.

He was a participant trying to become useful before Vanessa made him disposable.

He provided the location of the original Red Quay accounting files.

He also claimed the red binder contained original loan guarantees and the supposed codicil draft.

Then he gave us a major answer about Account 9826.

Charles and Vanessa had not simply hidden it.

They had created a false closure statement and routed the reserve through Red Quay to support a leveraged investment fund Vanessa controlled indirectly.

Julian was paid to reconcile the paperwork.

When the investment failed, the reserve could not be returned.

Everything afterward had been concealment.

The missing money was not one theft.

It was a chain.

Vanessa’s arrogance started it.

Julian’s technical skill extended it.

Charles’s entities moved it.

Austin’s sloppy permissions gave it cover.

Then my pregnancy created the deadline.

A complete mechanism.

But Vanessa counterattacked before we could breathe.

She filed a civil declaration accusing Austin of coercive control and me of conspiring with him to manufacture evidence.

Her attorneys cited his private security team, my recorded meeting, and the bait message sent through Susan.

Nothing automatically proved misconduct.

But the allegations forced review.

A child welfare representative requested to speak with us because Lily had witnessed the pool incident and because both sides now alleged threats around her.

I felt humiliated.

Then I reminded myself what scrutiny had done to Vanessa.

Truth survived it.

Austin looked less certain.

“They’re questioning whether Lily is safe with us because Vanessa threatened her?”

“They’re questioning everything.”

“I hate this.”

“So do I.”

He looked at me.

“What do we do?”

“Tell the truth.”

We did.

No performance.

No family influence.

No attempt to control the interviewer.

Lily stayed with me during part of the meeting and clung to my dress when the word pool was mentioned.

The representative noticed.

So did I.

Afterward, she made no emergency recommendation to remove Lily.

But she requested a formal safety plan.

A cost.

Real.

Then Daniel brought us another message from Julian.

Vanessa had one remaining piece of leverage.

Not money.

Not the codicil.

A recording of Austin.

And Julian said that if she released it without context, it could destroy him.

📖 Julian finally explained how the fraud worked, but his cooperation revealed Vanessa still possessed a recording capable of turning Austin’s own words against him. 👇
