Chapter 7 - THE ROOT CELLAR

We went the next morning.

Owen.

Dylan.

Me.

Not Vanessa.

She didn’t argue.

That was probably wise.

The farmhouse smelled like dust and old wood.

The cellar door still stuck halfway.

I pulled harder.

Same groan.

Same dark stairs.

Eleven years disappeared.

The loose brick remained behind the shelf.

I removed it.

Empty.

Dylan swore.

Then Owen crouched.

“Wait.”

Fresh mortar around the lower stone.

Not recent.

But newer than the wall.

We called professionals before tearing anything apart.

That mattered.

If this was evidence, we weren’t going to contaminate it because drama felt satisfying.

The investigators who eventually arrived treated the property carefully.

Inside a sealed cavity:

A weatherproof case.

Thomas Maddox’s handwriting.

Two flash drives.

Paper invoices.

One photograph.

And a handwritten letter:

For Harper Bellamy.

My knees went weak.

Owen handed it to me.

“You should read it.”

I opened.

Major Bellamy,

You saved three men because you refused an order that was designed to leave us there.

I stopped.

Owen looked away.

I continued.

I owe you a truth I was not brave enough to give you when I visited your mother.

I knew the extraction had been delayed intentionally.

He named Vale.

Harlan.

Helix.

Then:

I also knew your injury report was rewritten so you could be pressured into silence without understanding the full reason.

My hands shook.

They had told me disclosure would compromise ongoing operations.

Thomas said the real reason was liability.

If my report showed the aircraft fire behaved consistently with counterfeit fuel-line assemblies, lawsuits and procurement investigations would follow.

My medical notes mattered.

The burn pattern mattered.

My scar mattered.

That was why they erased me.

Not because I was unimportant.

Because my body was evidence.

I sat on the cellar floor.

For eleven years, I hated the scar because it felt like the only visible thing left from a mission nobody would acknowledge.

Now I understood the reason they needed me ashamed of it.

Owen crouched beside me.

“You okay?”

“No.”

Good answer.

Then the letter changed.

Thomas wrote:

There is something else you need to know.

My stomach tightened.

The third passenger was not the only unauthorized person on Raven Three.

I looked at Owen.

He frowned.

Who else?

The letter:

Your brother Dylan Bellamy was listed in a contractor access database connected to Helix two years before his employment with Vale.

I stared at the page.

Dylan went pale.

“What?”

“You were in the system before you worked there.”

“That’s impossible.”

Thomas explained.

Someone used Dylan’s identity to create subcontractor credentials.

Why?

Because Bellamy was a useful surname.

If procurement logs later surfaced, investigators might believe my own family had ties to Helix.

An alternate narrative.

Harper Bellamy exposed as connected through brother to vendor network.

Discredit the witness.

Dylan sat.

“They built this before I even knew Vale.”

“Yes.”

He looked sick.

Then another line:

Marcus Vale arranged Dylan’s later employment deliberately to make the connection real after the fact.

My brother hadn’t stumbled into Vale’s company.

He had been recruited because of me.

Dylan covered his face.

For once, I felt sorry for him.

Then Owen examined the flash drives.

Encrypted.

We needed professionals.

The paper invoices already showed enough.

Helix subcontractors.

Fake serial numbers.

Payments.

Then one invoice had handwritten initials.

E.B.

Elaine Bellamy.

Mom.

My mother.

Payment:

$75,000.

Consulting services.

I stared.

Dylan whispered:

“Mom?”

Owen looked at me.

Nobody said what we were all thinking.

Had my mother taken money to stay quiet?

I wanted to reject it.

Then remembered how many times she lied.

How many things she hid.

How often she said she was protecting me.

The pattern cut both ways.

When we confronted her, she did not deny receiving the money.

She said:

“I can explain.”

May you like

And for the first time, I didn’t want the explanation.

I wanted proof.
