Chapter 13 - VANESSA’S BOYS

Vanessa’s sons contacted me indirectly.

Ethan, twelve.

Mason, nine.

They wanted to see Lily.

The cousins had been close before family fracture.

I asked Lily.

“Yes.”

We met at park.

Vanessa did not attend.

Thomas brought them.

Ethan apologized immediately.

“For what?”

“My mom.”

I stopped him.

“You don’t apologize for adults.”

He looked relieved.

Important.

Children should not inherit parental guilt.

They played.

Lily bossed Mason around.

Normal.

Then Ethan told me something quietly.

“Grandma used to say Lily wasn’t really family.”

My chest tightened.

“In front of you?”

He nodded.

“Mom told her to stop sometimes.”

Interesting.

Vanessa had defended Lily occasionally.

People remain complicated.

Then:

“Mom said it when she was mad too.”

Also true.

No clean villain.

Then Ethan said:

“Mom cries a lot now.”

I didn’t respond.

Not his burden.

“Are you okay?”

He shrugged.

“Dad says we’re going to therapy.”

Good.

Cycle interruption.

Then Vanessa eventually gained permission for a therapist-mediated apology to Lily.

Only because Lily agreed.

Vanessa sat across from her.

“I pushed you.”

“Yes.”

“I scared you.”

“Yes.”

“I said something cruel because I wanted your mom hurt.”

Lily hugged rabbit.

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

Then Vanessa did the right thing.

Stopped.

No:

Can you forgive me?

No:

I was stressed.

No:

Your grandmother manipulated me.

Just apology.

Lily said:

“I don’t want you to push me again.”

“I won’t.”

“If you do, Mommy will slap you.”

I choked.

Therapist looked at me.

“We’re working on nonviolent boundaries.”

Everyone laughed.

Even Vanessa.

That was the first shared laughter since Room 306.

Then Lily asked:

“Can I see Ethan and Mason?”

“Yes.”

“Can you come too?”

Vanessa froze.

“You want me there?”

“Maybe next time.”

Vanessa nodded.

“Okay.”

Small door.

Not fully open.

Enough.

Then outside, Vanessa told me:

“I don’t deserve how easy she makes this.”

“She isn’t making anything easy.”

“What do you mean?”

“She’s giving you one chance. Don’t turn that into entitlement.”

Vanessa nodded.

Old Claire would have softened.

New Claire didn’t.

Kindness without boundaries had nearly cost us everything.

I wasn’t repeating it.
