Chapter 14 - WHAT THE DOCTOR REALLY SAW

When I was seventeen, I shadowed Dr. Reed for a school career program.

I wanted medicine.

Maybe because of him.

Maybe not.

During lunch, I asked:

“What did you think when you felt my cheek?”

He looked at me.

“I thought something was wrong.”

“No kidding.”

He smiled.

Then became serious.

“I noticed your wrists first.”

I froze.

“The cheek wasn’t what made you suspicious?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“You.”

He explained.

I didn’t look toward Greg for comfort.

I looked toward Greg before answering.

I moved behind Dr. Reed when Greg approached.

I became quieter whenever Greg spoke.

Those weren’t proof.

But they were reasons to slow down.

Then:

“When Greg said ‘don’t touch that,’ I became more concerned.”

“And when it moved?”

“I knew we needed imaging.”

“And when he said put it back?”

Dr. Reed leaned back.

“That was when I knew Greg understood more than he was telling us.”

I had spent years thinking the tiny capsule saved me.

It didn’t.

People did.

Observation did.

Documentation did.

Sarah noticing.

Dr. Reed asking me instead of Greg.

Mom finally leaving.

Jennifer eventually telling truth.

Hale protecting trust.

And me speaking.

No single magical clue.

A chain.

Then Dr. Reed said:

“You know what I remember most?”

“What?”

“You grabbed my scrub top.”

I remembered.

“Why?”

“You looked at me like you had decided I was either going to help you or betray you.”

My throat tightened.

“And?”

“I really didn’t want to be the second one.”

I looked away.

Then he said:

“You shouldn’t have needed to be brave at nine.”

That sentence hurt.

Because everyone always told me I was brave.

Sometimes calling children brave hides the fact adults failed them.

I understood that now.

Then Dr. Reed handed me a stethoscope.

“Your turn.”

I put it on.

He laughed.

“Wrong way.”

“Shut up.”

“Excellent bedside manner.”

For the first time, that ER existed in my mind as more than the place Greg dragged me.

It was also the place I discovered what kind of adult I wanted to become.

Someone who noticed.

May you like

Someone who asked.

Someone who listened when a frightened kid couldn’t say everything yet.
