Chapter 11 - The Decision in the Cockpit

Lightning illuminated the flooded runway.
The pilot watched the weather window closing.
“Admiral, I need a decision.”
Preston looked at Grace.
She saw calculation behind his eyes.
If he refused and the facility was lost, the flight recorder would reveal an old abandonment beside a new one.
If he approved, Grace’s challenge would weaken his authority but protect him from another disaster.
“Proceed,” he said.
The pilot started the turn.
Grace exhaled.
Then Preston added, “Lieutenant Commander Donovan remains relieved and confined to the cargo bay.”
Grace nodded once.
“As long as we fly.”
Ben followed her out.
“You just ended your career.”
“Not yet.”
“You challenged a rear admiral in front of his crew.”
“He challenged forty-three people’s right to live.”
The C-130 climbed through brutal turbulence.
Everett’s condition worsened.
The medic suspected internal bleeding.
He needed surgery.
The nursing facility extraction would delay hospital arrival by at least twenty minutes.
Grace crouched beside him.
“You may not survive the diversion.”
Everett looked toward the boy he had helped save.
“Neither would they.”
Preston stood several feet away.
His face showed nothing.
Everett reached for his son.
Charles did not take his hand.
Instead, he looked toward the case.
Grace saw it.
“Ben, move the evidence.”
Ben carried the case toward the secured forward compartment.
Preston stepped into his path.
“That material is under my authority.”
Everett forced himself upright.
“No.”
His voice cut through the aircraft noise.
“For twenty-seven years, you let me carry your crime.”
Preston’s expression cracked.
“You signed the report.”
“I did.”
“You received your pension.”
“I did.”
“You protected yourself too.”
Everett nodded.
“Yes.”
The honesty silenced Preston.
Everett looked toward Grace.
“Do not make me innocent. I was not.”
Then the aircraft suddenly dropped.
The cargo lights flickered.
The mother screamed.

The flight recorder case slid across the deck toward the open drainage channel.
👉 Grace lunged for the evidence as Preston reached for it from the opposite side.
