Chapter 7 - The Crash That Built a Career

Grace closed the locker as footsteps approached.
Preston entered the cargo bay.
He saw the open case.
His face changed.
Not surprise.
Fury.
“You have violated classified storage.”
Grace held up the flight recorder.
“This was listed as unrecovered.”
“Put it down.”
“Why is it on an evacuation aircraft?”
Preston looked at Ben and Nash.
“Leave us.”
Neither moved.
“That was an order.”
Grace shook her head.
“They stay.”
Preston stepped closer.
“You have no understanding of what happened that night.”
“Then explain it.”
His eyes moved toward Everett.
“My father has been unstable for years.”
Everett tried to rise.
“You left them.”
Preston’s jaw tightened.
Grace looked between them.
“Who did he leave?”
Everett pointed weakly toward the recorder.
“The second helicopter.”
The official Night Harbor report stated only one aircraft crashed.
Grace opened the maintenance log.
Two helicopter tail numbers appeared.
One belonged to the known aircraft.
The second had been crossed out in red ink.
Ben read the page.
“There were two rescue helicopters.”
Everett nodded.
“The second carried six civilians.”
Preston’s voice sharpened.
“They never launched.”
Everett looked directly at him.
“You flew it.”
The cargo bay went silent.
Preston had built his reputation on surviving Night Harbor and helping rescue passengers from the first helicopter.
If Everett was telling the truth, Preston had piloted a second aircraft whose existence had been erased.
Grace examined the photographs.
One showed young Preston standing beside the second helicopter.
Another showed damage on its tail rotor before takeoff.
A mechanic had written:
UNSAFE FOR FLIGHT.
Grace looked at the admiral.
“You launched with a known mechanical failure.”
Preston’s eyes became cold.
“I followed orders.”
Everett closed his eyes.
May you like
“No, Charlie. You gave them.”
👉 The disaster that made Preston a hero may have begun with an order he issued himself.
