Chapter 13 - The Heartbeat That Stopped

Grace heard the alarm.

She turned.

The medic began chest compressions on Everett.

Preston rushed toward the cot.

For the first time, command disappeared from his face.

“Dad?”

The medic ordered him back.

Grace stood between the open ramp and the dying man.

Outside, elderly residents waited in wheelchairs as floodwater approached the runway.

Inside, Everett had no pulse.

Ben looked at her.

“Grace, we need you outside.”

She wanted to stay.

She wanted to hear the monitor recover.

But forty-three people remained exposed.

Everett had chosen the diversion knowing its cost.

Grace turned toward Preston.

“Be his son.”

Then she ran down the ramp.

Nash carried residents one by one through the wind.

Ben secured wheelchairs to the loading track.

Grace moved toward a bus half-submerged beside the facility.

Staff members guided patients through waist-deep water.

A woman lost her footing.

Grace caught her beneath both arms.

The current pulled against them.

She planted her boots and drove forward.

Inside the aircraft, Preston watched the medic shock Everett’s heart.

Once.

Twice.

No response.

The boy Grace had rescued stood near the cargo wall, holding his mother’s hand.

He watched Preston.

“Is that your dad?”

Preston looked at him.

“Yes.”

“My dad died.”

The admiral swallowed.

The boy continued.

“He always said you don’t stop helping because you’re scared.”

Preston turned toward Everett.

The medic delivered a third shock.

The monitor showed one weak beat.

Then another.

A pulse returned.

Preston gripped the cot rail.

Outside, Grace helped the last residents toward the ramp.

The runway lights flickered.

Water crossed the far end.

The pilot shouted through the intercom.

“Two minutes before takeoff!”

Grace counted heads.

Forty-two.
