Chapter 6 - Locker Eighteen

Grace waited until Preston entered the cockpit.

Then she approached the equipment cabinet.

Ben caught her arm.

“Do not open that.”

“Why?”

“Because he will end your career.”

“He ordered us to leave his father underwater.”

“We don’t know why.”

“That is exactly why I’m opening it.”

Locker 18 was secured with a coded latch.

Grace examined the panel.

Fresh scratches surrounded the keypad.

Someone had opened it recently and changed the code.

Nash joined them.

“The admiral loaded a metal case into that compartment before takeoff.”

“Did you see the case?”

“Black, military issue, no manifest tag.”

Ben looked toward the cockpit.

“This aircraft was assigned to hurricane evacuation. Why would he bring an unlisted case?”

Everett groaned from the cot.

His fingers moved toward his watch.

Grace crouched beside him.

“What is in the locker?”

His voice was nearly inaudible.

“The truth… I failed to carry.”

Grace looked at the engraved date.

August 18, 1999.

She pressed the watch crown.

The rear plate opened.

Inside was a tiny folded strip of waterproof paper.

A six-digit number had been written across it.

Ben stared.

“The locker code.”

Grace entered the digits.

The latch released.

Inside sat a black case and an old flight recorder wrapped in plastic.

A red evidence label was attached.

NIGHT HARBOR — UNRECOVERED.

Ben stepped back.

“That recorder was officially lost.”

Grace opened the case.

Inside were maintenance logs, photographs, and a cassette tape.

Every document carried the same date as the watch.

Nash looked toward the cockpit.

“Why is Admiral Preston carrying evidence from a twenty-seven-year-old crash during a hurricane mission?”

Everett answered from behind them.

May you like

“Because tonight… he planned to destroy it.”

👉 The storm was not delaying Preston’s plan—it was providing the perfect place to make the evidence disappear.
