Chapter 1 - THE CAMERA ABOVE THE MARBLE FOYER

Serena was already dragging Ethan across the marble foyer by his injured arm when I ran toward them.
He was only two.
His pale blue shirt had twisted around one shoulder, his socks slipped against the polished floor, and every time Serena pulled him another foot, his crying became weaker instead of louder.
“Stop! You’re hurting his arm!”
I reached for him.
Serena released Ethan so suddenly that he dropped onto his knees.
Then she turned and kicked me directly in the stomach.
The impact knocked the air from my lungs.
I hit the marble floor on my back.
Pain spread through my ribs while Serena stood over me in her burgundy dress and high heels.
“Who do you think you are, you lowly maid?”
For a second, I couldn’t breathe.
Then I heard Ethan.
Not crying anymore.
Whimpering.
That sound got me moving.
I crawled across the floor and pulled him carefully against my chest.
His injured arm stayed tight against his body.
He trembled so badly that his small teeth clicked together.
“Ethan… stay with me, baby.”
I had been Ethan Blackwood’s caregiver for fourteen months.
Officially, my job title was live-in childcare attendant.
Serena preferred maid.
She had called me that from the first week I entered Blackwood Manor.
Sometimes with a smile.
Sometimes in front of guests.
Sometimes while handing me a glass she could easily have placed on the table herself.
I learned early that correcting Serena only entertained her.
Protecting Ethan was different.
That was not negotiable.
The first time I noticed him protecting his left arm had been that morning.
Serena told me he had bumped it against his crib.
But bruises don’t usually make a toddler cry when someone gently puts on his sleeve.
I had planned to tell Victor the moment he returned.
Serena apparently knew that.
The dark hallway doors opened.
Victor Blackwood came into the foyer at almost a run.
He had returned from the city earlier than anyone expected.
His dark business suit was still buttoned.
His briefcase struck the wall as he dropped it.
Then he froze.
He saw me on the floor.
Ethan in my arms.
Serena standing above us.
“What the hell is happening here?”
Serena changed instantly.
I watched it happen.
Her shoulders dropped.
Her face softened.
One hand flew to her chest.
She stepped backward as though I had frightened her.
“She attacked him! I was protecting Ethan!”
Victor looked at me.
For one terrible second, I saw uncertainty.
Then his eyes dropped to Ethan’s arm.
“Claire?”
I tried to stand.
Pain stabbed through my stomach.
I stayed on my knees.
“She was dragging him.”
Serena shook her head violently.
“She’s lying.”
“You kicked me.”
“You grabbed Ethan!”
“I was trying to stop you.”
Victor walked toward us.
Ethan saw his father and started crying harder.
“Daddy.”
Victor’s face changed.
He crouched.
“Buddy, come here.”
Ethan didn’t move.
He held onto my uniform with his good hand.
That hurt Victor.
I saw it.
But he didn’t force him.
Instead he looked carefully at Ethan’s left arm.
A red band had formed around the wrist.
There was also swelling near the elbow that hadn’t been there at breakfast.
Victor’s jaw tightened.
“What happened to his arm?”
Serena answered immediately.
“Claire.”
I stared at her.
She pointed at me.
“I came downstairs and found her pulling him.”
“That is a lie.”
“She lost her temper because he wouldn’t eat lunch.”
I almost laughed.
Ethan had eaten lunch hours ago.
Victor knew it too.
He had watched us on a video call while Ethan smeared mashed potatoes across his own face.
“What time?” Victor asked.
Serena hesitated.
“What?”
“What time did Claire lose her temper over lunch?”
Serena’s eyes flickered.
“Around one.”
Victor slowly looked at me.
Then back at her.
“I spoke to Claire and Ethan at one fifteen.”
Serena recovered quickly.
“Then it was later.”
“You said lunch.”
“I don’t remember the exact time. I was frightened.”
She was good.
Not perfect.
But good enough that if I had not been lying on a marble floor with the mark from her shoe visible across my light blue uniform, somebody might have believed her.
Victor noticed it.
His eyes moved down my dress.
The dusty red outline of Serena’s heel was visible near my stomach.
His expression hardened.
“Did she kick you?”
“Yes.”
Serena laughed nervously.
“Oh, please.”
Victor stood.
“Did you?”
“She came at me.”
“That wasn’t the question.”
Serena crossed her arms.
“You are really going to take the maid’s word over mine?”
There it was.
Not Claire.
Not Ethan’s caregiver.
The maid.
Victor’s eyes changed.
Then he looked upward.
I followed his gaze.
Above the foyer arch, a small security camera blinked green.
Serena followed his eyes.
Her expression emptied.
I had never seen color leave someone’s face so quickly.
Victor stared at the camera.
Then at Serena.
“We don’t need anyone’s word.”
She swallowed.
“That camera doesn’t record.”
Victor looked at her.
“Yes, it does.”
“No. You told me the foyer system was offline.”
“I told you the old system was being replaced.”
Serena stopped breathing.
Victor pulled out his phone.
“I moved the foyer feed onto the new server three weeks ago.”
She took a step backward.
“Victor.”
He opened the security application.
The camera blinked above us.
Green.
Recording.
I felt Ethan’s fingers tighten around my blouse.
Victor looked down at his screen.
Then his face changed.
Not relief.
Confusion.
“What?”
I whispered.
He turned the phone.
The live camera worked.
But when he tried to open the recording from five minutes earlier, the screen displayed:
FILE UNAVAILABLE.
Serena exhaled.
Too quickly.
Victor noticed.
He tried another time.
Unavailable.
Another.
Unavailable.
Then he opened the system log.
His eyes narrowed.
The foyer camera had been recording all day.
Except for one period.
4:42 p.m. to 4:53 p.m.
Exactly when Serena dragged Ethan through the foyer.
Exactly when she kicked me.
Exactly when Victor arrived.
Eleven minutes had disappeared.
Victor slowly lifted his eyes.
Only three people in Blackwood Manor had administrator authority to delete security footage.
Victor.
His estate attorney.
