Chapter 11 - The Fire He Prepared for Us

The smell of gasoline spread through the sawmill.

Warren pointed his gun at Rachel.

“Open the account.”

“I need Rebecca’s fingerprint.”

He pushed a laptop across the table.

The screen displayed a banking portal.

Forty-three million dollars sat behind one final security layer.

Money stolen from employees, suppliers, and retirement funds.

I placed my hand near the scanner.

“Release Maisie first.”

“No.”

“Then you get nothing.”

Warren looked at me with the same expression he used when I was a child and refused to apologize for something Tyler had done.

“You always believed stubbornness made you strong.”

“It kept me alive.”

He stepped closer.

“Your mother never understood that.”

“No. She understood it and chose fear.”

Maisie began crying.

“Mommy, I want to go home.”

I kept my eyes on Warren.

“You hear her?”

“She will calm down.”

“You said the same thing when you put Rachel in chains.”

His face tightened.

“That woman stole from me.”

Rachel laughed softly.

“I documented what you stole.”

Warren struck her across the face.

I moved toward him.

He swung the gun at me.

“Touch the scanner.”

I pressed one finger against it.

The laptop requested a second verification code.

Rachel said, “The code is on the original cassette.”

“What cassette?”

The one from the red desk.

Warren had taken it from the office, but he had not understood its purpose.

He removed the cassette from the metal case.

Rachel directed him to insert it into an old recorder on the table.

A voice began playing.

Not Rachel’s.

Not Hannah’s.

Warren’s.

“If the factory fire spreads, no one will find Pierce’s body.”

The recording was eleven years old.

Elaine’s voice answered.

“And Hannah?”

“Everyone will believe she ran.”

Warren stared at the machine.

Rachel had lied.

The tape was evidence, not a code.

Police heard every word through our hidden transmitters.

Warren realized the trap.

He fired at Rachel.

I shoved her aside.

The bullet struck the table.

Maisie screamed.

Outside, officers breached the main doors.

Warren grabbed a flare from his jacket.

“If I lose this company, everyone loses.”

He lit it.

Lucas broke through a side window before police could stop him.

He tackled Warren.

The flare fell into the gasoline.

Fire raced across the floor.

I ran to Maisie and cut the ropes with a broken piece of metal.

Smoke filled the room.

Rachel shouted toward the back wall.

“There’s a tunnel!”

We moved through a hidden door as flames climbed the beams.

Lucas followed, dragging Warren after police handcuffed him.

Then part of the roof collapsed.

The impact separated us.

Maisie and I were trapped on one side.

Lucas, Rachel, and the officers disappeared behind burning debris.

Warren’s laughter came through the smoke.

“You still don’t know who started the factory fire eleven years ago.”

I looked back.

He was no longer beside the officers.

His handcuffs lay open on the floor.

👉 Warren escaped into the underground tunnels, leaving Rebecca and Maisie trapped while revealing that another family member had started the crime that began everything.
