Chapter 2 - The Night No One Mentioned

The paramedics arrived before Tessa could say more.

They placed Maisie on a stretcher and gave her oxygen. One medic checked her pupils while another attached a heart monitor.

“What happened?” he asked.

“I found her inside the dumpster.”

“How long was she there?”

“I don’t know.”

Warren answered from behind me.

“Probably a few minutes.”

The medic looked at him.

“How would you know?”

Warren’s confidence returned.

“I own the building. I was here.”

I stared at him.

“You told me you had just arrived.”

His eyes shifted toward mine.

“I misspoke.”

Lucas climbed into the ambulance with Maisie. I tried to follow, but Tessa grabbed my sleeve.

“Rebecca, wait.”

I pulled free.

“My daughter may have been poisoned.”

“She was.”

The words stopped me.

“What?”

Tessa looked toward our parents.

Elaine’s face went rigid.

“Tessa is upset,” she said. “She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”

Tessa wiped her tears.

“I saw Dad put something in Maisie’s juice.”

My knees weakened.

“When?”

“During dinner.”

We had gathered at the warehouse office to celebrate the company’s fiftieth anniversary. Warren insisted the event remain private because he planned to announce changes to the family ownership.

Maisie had complained that her apple juice tasted funny.

Elaine told her not to be rude.

An hour later, she disappeared.

“You saw him drug her and said nothing?”

“I thought it was medicine.”

“What medicine?”

Tessa shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Warren moved closer.

“She is lying.”

“Why would she lie?”

“Because she has always been jealous of you.”

Tessa laughed through her tears.

“That’s what you told everyone about Hannah too.”

The name hit me like a blow.

Hannah Cole had been our oldest sister.

She disappeared eleven years earlier when she was twenty-four.

Our parents said she stole money from the company and ran away with a married man.

We never heard from her again.

Warren forbade us from speaking her name.

I looked at Tessa.

“What does Hannah have to do with Maisie?”

Tessa’s mouth trembled.

“The night Hannah disappeared, she found something in Dad’s office.”

“What?”

“A file about the company.”

Warren grabbed her arm.

“That is enough.”

Tessa cried out.

I stepped between them.

“Take your hand off her.”

He released her slowly.

A police cruiser turned into the loading area.

Tessa leaned close to me.

“Hannah told me if anything happened to her, I should look inside the old red desk.”

“What red desk?”

“The one Dad ordered destroyed after she vanished.”

My father’s face went pale again.

Then Lucas called from the ambulance.

“Rebecca, we’re leaving!”

I ran toward him.

Before the doors closed, Tessa shouted one final sentence.

“Maisie saw Dad hiding what was left of it.”

👉 Maisie had been targeted because she discovered evidence connected to Hannah’s disappearance—and Warren believed the dumpster would hide both the child and the truth.
