Chapter 4 - The Hand in the Hospital Hallway

The medical team stabilized Maisie within minutes.

Dr. Grant disconnected the IV and sealed the tubing in an evidence bag.

“This was tampered with,” she said.

Detective Hayes locked down the pediatric floor.

Security reviewed every person who entered the room.

Lucas and I had been there.

Two nurses.

Dr. Grant.

And my mother.

Elaine had visited while I spoke to the detective in the hallway.

I had not even seen her arrive.

Security footage showed her standing beside Maisie’s bed for forty-three seconds.

Her body blocked the camera’s view of the IV.

When police found her near the elevators, she denied touching anything.

“I came to see my granddaughter.”

“You entered without telling us,” I said.

“You were busy accusing your family.”

Detective Hayes searched her purse.

Inside was a disposable syringe.

Elaine stared at it.

“That isn’t mine.”

The syringe contained traces of the same sedative found in Maisie’s blood.

My mother’s expression changed.

Not into guilt.

Into terror.

“Warren put that there.”

The hallway fell silent.

“You expect me to believe Dad planted a syringe in your purse?”

“He told me to carry it.”

“Why?”

“He said it contained emergency medication in case Maisie had another seizure.”

“Maisie has never had seizures.”

Elaine pressed one hand against her mouth.

For the first time, I saw that she might not know the full plan.

Detective Hayes placed her under arrest for suspected attempted poisoning.

As an officer took her away, Elaine grabbed my wrist.

“Rebecca, listen to me.”

I pulled back.

“Did you know he put her in that dumpster?”

“No.”

“Did you know he drugged her?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I knew he wanted her asleep.”

“Why?”

“He said she had found something that would ruin all of us.”

“What?”

“I don’t know.”

“You always say you don’t know.”

“Because Warren never tells me until it’s too late.”

That did not absolve her.

It only revealed how long she had chosen obedience over truth.

Detective Hayes received a call from officers at the warehouse.

They had found Maisie’s tablet.

It was inside Warren’s locked office.

The screen was shattered, but the memory card remained intact.

A forensic technician recovered three short videos.

The first showed party decorations.

The second showed Tessa arguing with Warren near the loading area.

The third began inside Warren’s office.

Maisie must have left the tablet recording beneath a chair.

Warren entered with a red wooden panel in his hands.

He placed it on the desk and pried open a hidden compartment.

Inside was a stack of photographs and a small cassette tape.

Then Tessa came in.

“You promised you destroyed that,” she said.

Warren replied, “I destroyed the desk. Not what Hannah hid inside it.”

Maisie moved behind the chair.

The camera shook.

Warren saw her.

The recording ended with his footsteps approaching.

Detective Hayes paused the last frame.

Behind Warren, reflected in the office window, stood another person.

Lucas.

My husband had been inside the room before Maisie disappeared.

👉 Rebecca believed Lucas had rushed in to save their daughter, but the recovered video placed him beside Warren when the trap began.
