Chapter 10 - Laura Had Chosen Serena Before Victor Did
The email existed in Laura’s archived account.
Subject:
A strange request.
Laura wrote to Serena five months before she died.
I know we didn’t part on good terms professionally. I also know you understand donor systems better than almost anyone I worked with.
I’m trying to organize Ethan’s care fund so Victor doesn’t drown in administration after I’m gone.
Would you review the structure?
I stared at the screen.
Serena had helped create the system she later exploited.
That was the major twist.
She knew every weakness because Laura had shown them to her.
Three earlier clues changed completely.
Serena knew exactly how the care-monitor approvals worked because she helped review them.
She knew Claire Bennett would become the backup monitor because Laura’s draft included my name from the beginning.
And she knew Laura’s childhood house mattered because Laura had discussed future legacy plans while designing Ethan’s trust.
Serena had not discovered these things accidentally after marrying Victor.
She carried them into the marriage.
But the emails complicated her motive.
At first, Serena genuinely helped.
She suggested stronger oversight.
She warned Laura against letting one family member control everything.
She even wrote:
Grief makes people easy to manipulate. Build the system so nobody has to rely on trust alone.
The irony was brutal.
Laura thanked her.
Then made one final request.
If Victor ever seems overwhelmed, please remind him the trust is for Ethan’s life, not for preserving mine.
Serena had once understood exactly what Laura wanted.
So what changed?
After Laura died, Serena met Victor again.
This time socially.
They fell in love.
I believed that part.
So did Victor.
But love collided with insecurity.
Everywhere Serena looked, Laura remained present.
A trust Serena helped design.
A caregiver Laura chose.
A sister Laura trusted.
A son who looked like Laura around the eyes.
A house full of Laura’s photographs.
Serena wanted a place that was hers.
Instead of building one honestly, she started erasing the old structure.
Cancel Claire.
Remove Megan.
Control the accounts.
Buy Laura’s childhood house and present it as her own act of devotion.
The fraud was not originally a plan to steal money.
It evolved from Serena’s need to become the person nobody could remove.
That did not excuse what she did.
It made it tragically understandable.
Then Victor asked the hardest question.
“Why hurt Ethan?”
Serena cried.
“I wasn’t trying to hurt him.”
I felt anger rise immediately.
But she continued.
“He went into my office and found Laura’s trust papers. He kept saying ‘Mommy.’ I tried to take them. He ran. I grabbed him.”
“And kept pulling when he screamed.”
She covered her face.
“Yes.”
“Then blamed Claire.”
“Yes.”
Victor stood.
That was the moment something ended inside him.
