Chapter 8 - MELISSA

Melissa survived the fire but remained in a medical coma for six years.
Cynthia kept her under a false name at a Meridian facility.
Her death certificate allowed Ivan to collect insurance and inherit property.
Her living body provided tissue samples.
Federal agents found her after Lucas described the “fire room.”
She was conscious but unable to speak clearly.
Dr. Reed recognized burns along her hand matching the photographs.
Melissa communicated through a tablet.
CYNTHIA DID IT.
IVAN WATCHED.
VALE SIGNED.
She also wrote JULIA ALIVE.
Julia’s car accident had been staged.
She lived inside another facility under guardianship.
The dead women were not always murdered.
Sometimes being legally dead made them more useful.
Bodies without rights.
Identities without owners.
Federal agents located Julia in Pennsylvania.
She had spent four years trying to convince staff she was not delusional.
Every denial became proof of illness.
Rebecca moved to restore both women’s identities through federal court.
Judge Vale fled before arrest.
Cynthia remained missing.
Ivan’s cooperation strengthened after he learned Melissa and Julia survived.
He wanted credit for not killing them.
Rebecca stared at him across the interview table.
“You helped erase them for years.”
“I did what my mother required.”
“You always return to her.”
“She made me.”
“No. She shaped you. You still acted.”
He had no answer.
Then investigators opened Julia’s private files.
She had a daughter.
Ava.
Born inside Meridian custody.
Cynthia raised Ava alongside Lucas for two years before transferring her to an executive family.
The executive was one of the barbecue guests.
Thomas Blake.
The man who lowered his drink when Ivan’s recording played.
He had known the Morgan system.
His shock was not moral.
It was fear of exposure.
Blake admitted paying Meridian for Ava’s adoption and medical records.
He claimed he believed Julia consented.
The forged paperwork said she did.
The video showed her sedated.
Ava was now five and deeply attached to Blake’s wife, who may not have known the truth.
The court began a careful process rather than another abrupt removal.
Then Rachel remembered Blake leaving the barbecue immediately after police arrived.
He had remained only because Ortiz stopped the guests.
During his statement, he deleted messages from Cynthia.
Technicians recovered one.
IF CLAIRE SURVIVES, MOVE THE CHILDREN NORTH.

Blake knew the escape plan.
And he knew where Cynthia went.
