Chapter 9 - THE NORTHERN HOUSE

Cynthia’s northern property sat in Maine behind a charitable women’s retreat.
Federal agents found medical suites beneath the main lodge.
Judge Vale was arrested near the private airstrip.
Cynthia remained inside with three children and a sealed archive.
She threatened to destroy the records if agents entered.
The archive contained identities for dozens of women and children.
Rebecca negotiated.
Cynthia demanded Ivan’s release and control of the Morgan trust.
Neither would happen.
She asked to speak with me.
Ortiz advised against it.
I agreed under secure conditions.
Cynthia appeared on a monitor wearing pearls and a cream suit.
No panic.
No visible exhaustion.
“You turned my family into a spectacle,” she said.
“You burned my hand in front of them.”
“Ivan did.”
“You ordered it.”
“I created clarity.”
“For whom?”
“For everyone. You finally showed what you are.”
“What am I?”
“Unmanageable.”
She believed the word was an insult.
It sounded like freedom.
Cynthia claimed the Morgan women carried a rare immune trait. Her husband’s illness inspired the original research. When legitimate studies moved too slowly, she built private ones.
Eleanor became the first subject.
Melissa and Julia followed.
I was selected because my father’s family strengthened the trait.
Anna provided comparison data.
Sophie, Lucas, and Ava became the next generation.
Every marriage, job, friendship, and clinic visit supported the experiment.
“You used your own family.”
“I preserved it.”
“You destroyed it.”
“Families survive through sacrifice.”
“Whose?”
She did not answer.
Always the women beneath her.
Always the children.
Never Cynthia.
Agents located the archive room through building plans.
Eleanor provided an old code from her captivity.
A tactical team entered through a maintenance tunnel.
The children were rescued without injury.
Cynthia escaped through the airfield tunnel with one hard drive.
The remaining archive survived.
It contained enough evidence to prosecute the network.
But Cynthia still held the master list.
Names of judges, doctors, executives, and adoptive families.
She could destroy lives.
Or control them.
Then she released one file publicly.
My medical history.
Edited recordings.
Private therapy notes.
Photographs of injuries.
She framed me as unstable and violent.
The internet believed whichever clip appeared first.

Public opinion shifted overnight.
The courtroom battle had begun before charges were filed.
