Chapter 12 - THE REAL DONOR

Madeline requested a private meeting with me.

We sat across from each other behind jailhouse glass.

Without the purple dress and perfect hair, she looked smaller.

Not harmless.

Just human enough to make her choices less excusable.

“Henry was not the donor,” she said.

“Who was?”

“Brandon.”

I stared at her.

Independent DNA testing had said he was not Luke’s father.

“That test was accurate for the sample provided.”

She explained that Brandon’s stored fertility sample had been altered genetically before use.

The clinic replaced certain markers to strengthen the cardiac trait.

The resulting children were biologically connected to Brandon but modified enough to confuse standard paternity analysis.

They were his genetic children.

Not his siblings.

Henry allowed the false donor record because it protected the illegal gene-editing program.

I asked whether Brandon consented to genetic modification.

“No.”

“Did I?”

“No.”

Madeline looked toward the guard.

“Henry chose both of you because your profiles produced viable twins.”

“You helped him.”

“At first.”

“And later?”

“I tried to keep Luke in the family.”

“You poisoned him.”

“To stop Henry from taking him.”

“You could have told us the truth.”

“Truth would have destroyed everything.”

That sentence defined her.

She believed control was better than collapse.

Even when control required harm.

The new DNA evidence restored Brandon’s legal paternity but created another criminal charge against the research center.

Unauthorized human genetic modification.

Federal regulators entered the case.

The court recognized Luke and Grace as Brandon’s children.

Grace did not care about the ruling.

She asked whether he had wanted her.

Brandon told her the truth.

“I wanted every child Emily and I believed we had. I just didn’t know they took you.”

She stared at him.

“You wanted Luke.”

“I would have wanted you.”

“That isn’t the same.”

“No.”

He did not force a better answer.

That helped.

Then Rebecca Carter located a hidden audio file recorded during the embryo procedure.

A woman argued with Henry.

Madeline’s voice said, “Do not use Brandon’s sample.”

Henry answered, “It is already done.”

Madeline had tried to stop the implantation.

Not to protect us.

Because she had another embryo selected.

One carrying her own genetic material.

She had wanted to become the biological mother of the child raised inside our marriage.

Luke and Grace existed because Henry overruled her.

Madeline’s rage at Luke on the patio was not only about identity.

He represented the child she failed to control from conception.

Then Dr. Reed reopened the poisoned cake analysis.

The cardiac drug was present.

So was another compound.

A slow-acting anticoagulant.

Madeline had not intended a mild collapse.

If the bowl had not broken, Luke might have died hours later.
