Chapter 5 - THE DEAD DOCTOR

Henry Carter had faked his death.
The coffin at his funeral was closed.
Madeline claimed cancer had destroyed his body.
No independent physician verified it.
Rebecca Sloan traced payments from the family trust to a private medical compound in Vermont.
The recipient was listed as H. Cole.
Detective Ortiz obtained federal assistance.
Agents reached the compound and found it abandoned.
Inside were pediatric rooms, research equipment, and photographs of children at different ages.
Noah appeared in dozens.
So did Luke.
The most recent picture of Luke had been taken from outside our house three weeks earlier.
Someone had monitored him constantly.
Henry had not abandoned the program.
He operated it from hiding.
A wall map showed the locations of the remaining active subjects.
One pin marked our hospital.
Another marked an estate owned by Judge Margaret Cole—the same judge who signed the emergency transfer.
The Carter family network extended through medicine and law.
Brandon confronted Madeline.
“Where is Dad?”
She remained silent.
“Is he watching Luke?”
Still nothing.
Brandon struck the table with his palm.
Madeline smiled faintly.
“Now you understand what helplessness feels like.”
She had resented Henry for controlling the project.
The public face of obedience hid a private war between them.
Madeline wanted custody of Luke not only to continue the research but to keep Henry from taking him.
That did not make her a protector.
She poisoned a child to move him first.
Two predators fought over my son while each claimed the other was worse.
Rebecca Carter finally contacted us directly.
She called Brandon’s phone.
“I have Noah.”
Brandon stopped breathing.
Noah was alive, now fourteen, and seriously ill.
Henry had used him as the long-term comparison subject.
Rebecca escaped with him after learning Henry planned to replace Noah’s failing heart tissue with cells taken from Luke.
Luke’s collapse activated the transfer because the program wanted both boys in one location.
“Where are you?” Brandon asked.
“I can’t tell you.”
“You let us bury him.”
“I was trying to keep him alive.”
“You let me mourn him for eight years.”
Rebecca’s voice cracked.
“I did what I thought would protect him.”
Another person making decisions through secrecy.
I took the phone.
“Does Luke know Noah?”
“No.”
“Does Noah know us?”
“He knows Brandon as the brother who buried him.”
Brandon covered his face.
Rebecca continued.
“Noah does not want Luke harmed.”
“Then bring him to authorities.”
“I don’t trust the judge.”
Neither did we.
Rebecca offered evidence in exchange for immunity and protection.
Before the terms were agreed, gunshots sounded behind her.
The call ended.
Minutes later, Luke’s heart monitor alarmed again.
This time, no poison was involved.
His underlying condition was worsening.
Dr. Reed said he needed medical information from the research program within hours.
May you like
Madeline had the treatment code.
She would provide it only if we signed custody over to her.
