Chapter 7 - NOAH
Noah arrived under federal escort.
He was thin, pale, and older than the child in the lake photograph.
When Brandon entered his room, Noah turned away.
“You buried me.”
“I thought you were dead.”
“You didn’t open the coffin.”
“I was eighteen.”
“You believed her.”
The accusation landed harder because it was true.
Brandon sat several feet away.
“I’m sorry.”
Noah did not accept it.
He did not need to.
Rebecca Carter lay in the adjoining room recovering from a gunshot wound.
She explained Henry’s plan.
The rare cardiac marker allowed cellular repair, but every subject eventually developed instability.
Noah’s disease worsened first.
Luke’s tissue might help.
Henry planned an experimental procedure connecting both boys’ circulatory systems temporarily.
The procedure could save Noah.
It could also kill Luke.
No informed ethics board had approved it.
Henry considered the risk acceptable.
Noah had refused.
That was why Rebecca escaped with him.
Dr. Brooks reviewed the research.
A safer treatment might be possible using donated cells and standard safeguards.
But Henry had hidden the manufacturing method.
Madeline knew part.
Rebecca knew part.
Noah remembered the final code because Henry made him repeat it during treatments.
For the first time, the child they considered a failed subject held power over the entire program.
He agreed to help only if Luke remained safe.
The hospital produced a therapy plan.
Then Judge Cole filed an injunction claiming Noah was medically incompetent and subject to Henry’s guardianship.
Rebecca Sloan challenged it.
The hearing exposed forged psychiatric evaluations, altered birth records, and payments from the Carter trust.
Judge Cole should have recused herself.
Instead, she ruled from the bench.
Federal agents arrested her minutes later after Ortiz produced bank evidence.
Noah smiled for the first time.
But Henry remained missing.
Madeline offered to help locate him.
She wanted immunity.
Rebecca Sloan refused.
Madeline leaned toward me.
“You think Henry needs Luke only for Noah?”
“What else?”
“He created another child.”
A girl.
Subject 15.
The program had already produced a replacement using another stolen embryo.
Madeline did not know where the child lived.
She only knew Henry planned to use Luke’s collapse to bring all three subjects together.
Then Luke’s hospital bracelet transmitted an unauthorized signal.
