Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN ACROSS THE STREET

Evelyn stepped outside before the police reached the porch.
She wore a cream raincoat and carried no umbrella. She looked like a grieving mother arriving to save her family.
Daniel pointed toward me.
“My wife is having an episode.”
Evelyn raised both hands.
“Emily, sweetheart, come down.”
I had never met her.
Yet she spoke my name with intimacy.
Detective Ortiz arrived with Rebecca and ordered Daniel away from Rachel. Officers entered Mr. Bennett’s home to secure the ledger.
Evelyn approached me from below.
“Your father would be ashamed.”
The words struck harder than a threat.
“You knew him.”
“I loved him.”
My father and Evelyn had built Providence together after my mother discovered their affair. According to Evelyn, my mother threatened to expose them.
Then she died.
“Was her death fake too?” I asked.
Evelyn’s expression softened.
“No. Your mother truly died.”
The cruelty of the distinction chilled me.
Daniel tried to enter the house, but Ortiz blocked him.
“We have a warrant.”
“For what?”
“Kidnapping, fraud, drugging, evidence tampering.”
Daniel looked toward Evelyn.
She gave the smallest shake of her head.
Do not speak.
He obeyed instantly.
Evelyn was the real authority.
Firefighters helped me from the roof. As soon as my feet touched the ground, a contraction folded me forward.
My water broke on the porch.
Rebecca caught me.
An ambulance rushed me back to the hospital while Ortiz searched the house and garage.
This time, Daniel did not come with me.
Rachel rode beside me, holding my hand.
“I’ll testify,” she said.
At the hospital, Dr. Samuel Price examined me. The baby was distressed but stable. He wanted to delay delivery if possible.
Priya returned despite her suspension.
She had received Rachel’s recording from the phone in the hedge. It captured Daniel admitting the guardianship scheme and attacking his sister.
“We have him,” Priya whispered.
Then Detective Ortiz called.
The hidden basement had been found.
Inside were restraints, medication, cameras, legal documents, and personal belongings from five women.
But there was no evidence linking Evelyn directly to the room.
Only Daniel and Lauren.
Evelyn had designed the system so others absorbed the risk.
Ortiz also found a live video feed pointed at my hospital bed.
Someone had been watching me from the basement.
Priya unplugged the room camera.
Too late.
The fetal monitor alarm sounded.
Dr. Price rushed in.
The baby’s heartbeat was falling.

On the IV line beside me, a fresh puncture mark appeared.
Someone had injected something into the tubing.
