Chapter 14 - THE HEARING

The emergency custody hearing began forty-eight hours after my daughter was born.

I entered the courtroom in a wheelchair, Sophia sleeping against my chest.

I had chosen the name myself.

Not because Daniel had written it above the crib.

Because I refused to let him contaminate a name I loved.

Daniel sat beside three attorneys. His face showed carefully measured concern. He wore no handcuffs because Judge Hale had dismissed the criminal warrant before disappearing again.

Lauren appeared by video from county jail.

Rachel sat behind Rebecca.

Mr. Bennett, Priya, Michael, Detective Ortiz, and Dr. Price waited as witnesses.

The courtroom was full.

Daniel’s attorney argued that I was unstable, vindictive, and medically delusional. He presented edited videos of me screaming inside the cage without showing what happened before or after.

Then Rebecca played the full recordings.

The room watched Daniel drug my water.

They watched Lauren instruct me to repeat false statements.

They watched Rachel discover the ledger.

They heard Daniel admit the plan.

His expression never changed.

Until Rebecca introduced the blue ledger.

Daniel leaned toward his attorney.

The first real crack.

Lauren testified next.

She admitted falsifying medical records and prescribing sedatives, but blamed Daniel entirely.

Rebecca displayed bank transfers from Providence to Lauren’s private account.

Lauren began to cry.

“I was afraid of Evelyn.”

The judge presiding was not Hale but Judge Maria Collins, appointed after federal agents opened an investigation.

“Where is Evelyn Carter?” Judge Collins asked.

Lauren lowered her eyes.

“I don’t know.”

Rebecca called Rachel.

Daniel stared at his sister as she approached the witness stand.

Rachel’s voice trembled, but she told the truth.

The cage.

The custody transfer.

The first pregnancy.

Evelyn’s threats.

Daniel’s attack.

When she finished, Daniel stood.

“She’s lying because she wants the child.”

The judge ordered him seated.

Rebecca then called me.

I described waking without memories, finding the collar with my name, seeing the hidden basement, and learning that the law considered me dead.

Daniel finally lost control.

“She was supposed to stay asleep!”

The words rang through the courtroom.

His attorneys froze.

Rebecca turned slowly.

“What did you say?”

Daniel realized his mistake.

Federal agents moved toward him.

Before they reached the table, every phone in the courtroom buzzed at once.

A mass email had been sent from my father’s old account.

The subject line read:

EMILY, YOUR FATHER IS ALIVE.

Attached was a live video.

My father sat tied to a chair in an unknown room.

Evelyn stood behind him.

And she held a gun against his head.
