Chapter 13 - THE MASK

Evelyn moved before anyone else understood.
She reached toward my medication line.
Priya slammed the emergency button and pulled the tubing away. Ortiz drew her weapon.
“Hands where I can see them.”
Evelyn slowly removed the surgical mask.
The room went silent.
She smiled at me.
“You have your mother’s eyes.”
I wanted to attack her, but another contraction tore through me.
Dr. Price ordered everyone out except the surgical team. Ortiz handcuffed Evelyn to a metal rail.
Even restrained, she remained calm.
“You think arrest changes ownership?” she asked.
“This child belongs to me.”
“No,” I said through clenched teeth. “She belongs to herself.”
The baby’s heartbeat dropped again.
There was no time for a full investigation, no time for revenge, no time to understand every lie.
Only time to survive.
The cesarean began under emergency anesthesia while I remained conscious.
Priya stood near my head.
“Keep looking at me.”
I heard instruments. Commands. The rapid beeping of monitors.
Then silence.
The kind of silence that destroys a mother before anyone speaks.
“Why isn’t she crying?”
Dr. Price did not answer.
A nurse carried my daughter toward a warming table.
Rachel sobbed near the doorway.
Then a tiny cry filled the room.
My entire body collapsed with relief.
“She’s breathing,” Priya said.
I turned my head.
For one second, I saw my daughter’s red face and moving hands.
Then the lights flickered.
The backup generator failed.
Darkness swallowed the operating room.
Someone screamed.
Metal struck the floor.
When emergency lights returned, Evelyn was gone.
The handcuff remained attached to the rail.
The warming table was empty.
My daughter had disappeared.
Rachel stood in the doorway, bloodless and shaking.
A nurse lay unconscious beside her.
Ortiz ran into the hallway.
I tried to rise, but pain pinned me down.
“Where is my baby?”
No one answered.
Then Priya saw movement beneath the surgical drape.
She reached down and lifted a bundled infant from beneath the table.
My daughter.
Evelyn had taken a decoy blanket.
Dr. Price had hidden the baby during the blackout.
I held her against my chest, shaking.
Ortiz returned.
“Evelyn escaped through a service elevator.”
Rebecca entered moments later with worse news.
Daniel had been released.
May you like
Judge Hale had issued an order claiming all warrants were invalid.
And according to the new court filing, Daniel was already petitioning for immediate custody of my newborn daughter.
