Chapter 8 - The Unedited Clip

Ben recovered the cloud login from an old browser token Ryan had been careless enough to leave on a laptop he’d once shared with me for tax records.

“What I’m about to show you may be admissible only as a lead, not as evidence,” Maya warned. “You understand that?”

“I understand I’m done being blind.”

Ben opened a folder stamped with auto-synced dates and generic file names. Most were family clutter—receipts, golf photos, a dinner reservation screenshot. Then he clicked a video from the day before the hearing.

The screen shook for a second, then steadied on the laundry room doorway.

Noah was already kneeling beside the bowls.

The chain was around his neck.

Diane stood over him pulling it twice, harder the second time.

“Cry,” she snapped. “Louder.”

Ryan’s voice came from just off frame. “Not yet. Wait until Claire sees it.”

I grabbed the edge of Ben’s table so hard my knuckles popped.

On screen, Noah cried, “I don’t want to.”

Diane leaned down and hissed, “Then the judge won’t know you’re bad.”

The door flew open. I burst in. Everything that happened next unfolded exactly as I remembered it—my shock, the chain, the rescue, the slap.

But after the moment Ryan’s edited version cut away, the unedited video kept going.

Ryan lowered the phone and said, in a flat practical voice I had never heard from him before, “The judge only needs thirty seconds. Save that.”

Ben froze the frame.

For a long moment nobody in the room spoke.

Then Maya said, “This is huge, but if we submit it without properly tracing chain of custody, they’ll attack how we obtained it before they ever address what it shows.”

“Then subpoena the account.”

“I will. But Ryan will claim privacy, spoliation, manipulation, anything available.”

Maya was right. I knew she was right. But every part of me wanted to march the laptop straight into court.

Sarah called while we were still staring at the paused frame. Her voice was clipped. “Ryan filed a motion for immediate modification. He wants Noah transferred to his care for psychological evaluation. He says the child is exhibiting escalating distress in your custody.”

“Distress you just watched them create,” I said.

“I haven’t watched anything yet,” she replied. “And until the court authorizes materials, I have to proceed carefully.”

Carefully. The word tasted like delay.

That evening, Ryan texted for the first time since the hearing.

You can still settle this privately.

I typed back: You staged our son’s suffering.

He replied almost immediately.

Prove it in a way the judge can use.

I stared at the message until the letters blurred. It wasn’t denial. It was a challenge.

Before bed, Noah asked if Daddy was mad.

“Yes,” I said honestly.

“Because I told?”

“Yes.”

He curled into me and whispered, “I know where the box is too.”

“What box?”

“The one with the blinking lights Daddy took from the laundry room.”

I thought of Ben’s mention of backups and remote wipes.

“What color was it?”

“Black. Near the soaps.”

A home network drive. Or router. Or both.

And Ryan had removed it after the incident.
