Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WITH MY FACE

Security archives from Ridgeway showed a woman visiting Eli for years under the name Emily Carter.

She resembled me closely.

Same hair.

Same height.

Same voice.

But a small scar crossed her right palm.

I had no such scar.

Margaret admitted the woman was my older half sister, Claire Vale.

My father had a child with Margaret’s sister before marrying my mother.

Claire grew up inside the Vale network.

She was trained to act as a substitute mother for institutional children.

She used photographs and recordings to imitate women whose identities Vale had erased.

For Eli, she became me.

She told him I loved him but could not take him home because he was sick.

The lie kept him compliant.

Claire’s current location was unknown.

Daniel knew her.

“She helped children survive,” he said.

“She also maintained the deception.”

“She believed sudden truth would destroy them.”

Again, someone deciding how much reality another person could bear.

Claire contacted Hayes after her image became public.

She agreed to surrender in exchange for protection from Thomas Grant.

She had infiltrated his faction and knew where Sophie was held.

Federal agents met her at an abandoned church.

When I saw her, the resemblance unsettled me.

Not identical.

Close enough to confuse a frightened child.

Claire did not apologize immediately.

She said Eli needed someone to love.

“You pretended to be me.”

“I used the only face Margaret taught him to trust.”

“You could have told authorities.”

“Samuel controlled the authorities.”

“You could have told Daniel.”

“Daniel wanted to move every child.”

“And you wanted them to stay?”

“I wanted them prepared.”

Prepared.

Controlled.

Protected.

Every side had its word.

Claire surrendered Thomas’s location.

An old youth camp in the mountains.

Agents entered with Daniel guiding them through the service roads.

They found Sophie and six other children.

Thomas had prepared new identities and transport routes.

Some children refused to leave.

One girl cried that her father would kill her if she returned.

Hayes promised no automatic return.

Each case would receive independent review.

Thomas aimed a weapon at Daniel.

“You became weak.”

Daniel replied, “I became accountable.”

Thomas fired.

Claire pushed Daniel aside and took the bullet in her shoulder.

Agents arrested Thomas.

All children survived.

Claire recovered.

Eli asked to visit her.

I allowed it under supervision.

He called her Mom.

The word hurt.

I did not take it from him.

Claire had been his emotional parent inside a system of lies.

Truth would reshape that bond, not erase it instantly.

Then Madison’s medical team discovered her fetus had a genetic marker different from Noah and Eli.

The embryo was not created from my egg and Aaron’s sample as records claimed.

The biological mother was Claire.

The donor was Samuel Vale.

Margaret had implanted her niece’s embryo into Madison to create another child tied to every branch.

The pregnancy was another family experiment.

Madison chose to continue after counseling.

Claire did not claim the baby.

The child’s future would be decided without Vale control.

But Samuel filed a paternal-rights petition from jail.

Judge Hale’s replacement scheduled a hearing.

The system was wounded.

Not dead.
