Chapter 8 - MY BROTHER’S OFFER
Daniel claimed he never intended Noah to be injured.
He expected the boy to discover the drive and tell me.
Samuel followed Noah into the shed before Daniel’s people could intervene.
Martin arrived later.
Daniel blamed timing.
I blamed the plan.
“You used a six-year-old to expose criminals.”
“I used evidence Margaret hid inside his blanket.”
“You created a message in my voice.”
“So he would trust it.”
“You manipulated him.”
“To save him from a lifetime under her control.”
“You sound like her.”
His face hardened.
“She broke children.”
“And you decide where they belong.”
“I remove them from danger.”
“Without courts.”
“Courts gave Samuel power.”
“Without parents.”
“Parents ignored what was happening.”
“I missed signs. That does not give you ownership over my son.”
Daniel looked away.
For all his preparation, he had never imagined I would compare him to Margaret.
He offered the remaining Vale archive and locations of every hidden child if prosecutors allowed his network to continue operating under oversight.
Rebecca rejected the idea.
Daniel said official agencies would return children to abusers.
In some cases, he might be right.
That did not make secret guardianship acceptable.
Hayes asked him to surrender.
He refused.
Then he looked at Madison’s hospital file on another monitor.
“You need to move her.”
“Why?”
“Samuel has another judge.”
Judge Caroline Hale.
She had signed emergency orders for several Vale placements after Samuel retired.
Hale filed a petition that afternoon claiming Madison lacked capacity to continue the pregnancy.
Margaret was named temporary medical guardian despite being under investigation.
The filing relied on psychiatric records created by Vale doctors.
Even detained, Margaret’s system kept moving.
Rebecca challenged the petition.
Dr. Reed documented Madison’s competence.
The court suspended Margaret’s authority.
But someone had already entered Madison’s room using the false order.
A nurse found her IV altered.
Madison survived because the pump alarmed.
Security footage showed the attacker wearing janitorial scrubs.
Everyone turned toward Martin.
He was in federal custody during the attack.
Another member of Daniel’s network had entered the hospital.
Daniel’s people claimed they were trying to move Madison before Vale’s agents arrived.
Again, rescue without consent.
The intruder escaped but left behind a three-tree token.
Hayes traced the badge to a hospital employee named Thomas Grant.
One of the survivors who met us earlier.
Daniel’s network had never stopped operating around us.
Thomas sent a message:
MARGARET’S PEOPLE WERE THREE MINUTES AWAY. WE SAVED MADISON.
Madison replied through Rebecca:
YOU DRUGGED ME.
Thomas answered:
ONLY ENOUGH TO MOVE YOU SAFELY.
The same language as the Vale system.
Daniel saw the exchange.
His confidence finally cracked.
His network had adopted the methods he once hated.
He promised to shut down the operation if we allowed him to personally rescue Sophie, the missing girl whose mother had been falsely accused.
Rebecca offered legal coordination.
Daniel agreed to one meeting.
The location was the original lake shed.
At midnight.
He said he would bring Sophie and the remaining archive.
Then Noah whispered from his bed, “He won’t come alone.”
