Chapter 14 - THE WOMAN BEFORE MY BIRTH

The tape showed a pregnant woman inside the shed.
She looked like my mother, but younger.
Margaret stood outside the hatch.
Samuel held a clipboard.
My father watched from the doorway.
The woman’s name was Eleanor Reed.
My biological mother.
The woman I knew as my mother, Diane Carter, had adopted me after Eleanor disappeared.
Daniel and I shared the same father but different mothers.
Madison was Diane’s biological child.
Margaret had selected Eleanor for the early Carter-Vale reproductive study.
When she became pregnant with me, she tried to escape.
They confined her in the shed.
Daniel, then three, witnessed part of it and remembered later.
That was why he returned to the shed as a child and found the cameras.
The system began in our family before either of us understood words like guardianship or treatment.
Eleanor’s record said she died during childbirth.
No body existed.
A later tape showed her alive four years after my birth inside Saint Matthew’s.
She might have survived longer.
Claire recognized her photograph.
Eleanor helped raise her briefly inside the Vale network.
“She told me she had a daughter named Emily.”
My throat tightened.
“Where did she go?”
“Samuel transferred her.”
The final destination was listed as Ashbourne Women’s Institute in Maine.
Federal agents searched the abandoned facility.
Inside were medical archives and a recent patient photograph.
Eleanor Reed.
Age sixty-eight.
Alive.
She had spent more than three decades under false guardianship.
When we met, she stared at me for several seconds.
Then she said, “You have William’s eyes.”
No immediate embrace.
No miraculous recognition.
Medication and trauma had damaged parts of her memory.
But she remembered singing through the shed wall while Daniel sat outside.
He had spent his life trying to find her too.
Eleanor confirmed Diane adopted me with her consent initially.
Diane promised to keep me away from Margaret.
Later, Margaret pulled Diane into the system through money and threats.
Diane protected me from transfer but failed Daniel.
Family history became even less simple.
Eleanor asked about Noah and Eli.
I explained slowly.
She closed her eyes.
“They continued the line.”
The Carter-Vale program had used generations of relatives to study inheritance, trauma, and obedience.
The medical claims were exaggerated.
The real purpose was control.
Eleanor possessed one final memory.
A man named Charles Hayes visited Saint Matthew’s and photographed the children.
Detective Hayes froze when she said the name.
Charles was his father.
Hayes believed his father worked as a state investigator and died twenty years earlier.
Records showed Charles protected Vale facilities from police scrutiny.
Detective Hayes’s family was connected too.
He voluntarily stepped away from the investigation while federal authorities reviewed his access.
Another trusted person became complicated.
Before leaving, Hayes gave me every case file and said, “Do not trust my title more than the evidence.”
That was the right choice.
Then Eleanor recognized Martin’s photograph.
“He isn’t Martin Cole.”
“Who is he?”
She touched the scar above his eyebrow in the image.
“Daniel.”
The janitor was not a former farmhand.
May you like
He was my brother.
The man who later appeared as Daniel was someone else using his identity.
