Chapter 8 - Jake Made the Wrong Decision
Jake was given the opportunity to submit an additional statement.
His legal rights were explained.
He had access to proper counsel.
Nobody demanded a confession.
What he chose to do next was entirely his decision.
He blamed Ethan.
Not completely.
Carefully.
Jake admitted taking my food and dropping it.
He admitted telling me to pick it up.
But he claimed Ethan’s slap shocked him.
The video showed Jake smiling immediately afterward.
Jake explained that as nervousness.
Then he stated he had never encouraged physical aggression.
Mason’s testimony contradicted that pattern indirectly.
Noah’s testimony complicated it further.
Still, Jake might have preserved some credibility if he stopped there.
He did not.
He accused Noah of exaggerating events because Noah was jealous.
That decision changed the entire dynamic.
Noah had not sought attention.
He had not asked for a reward.
He had admitted his own failure to report earlier behavior.
Jake’s attempt to discredit him looked less like self-defense and more like retaliation.
Then Jake contacted Mason.
That was worse.
The message was not overtly threatening.
It said:
Be careful how you remember things. Everybody jokes differently.
Mason preserved it and reported it.
Captain Donovan called me.
“He just made this much harder for himself.”
“Yes.”
“Twenty-two years old.”
“That doesn’t make him a child.”
“No.”
Donovan sounded tired.
“It does make me wonder whether we can correct him or whether we’re documenting why he doesn’t belong here.”
That was the difficult question.
Military discipline is not supposed to exist solely to destroy careers.
Training exists partly because young adults arrive unfinished.
But accountability requires recognizing when correction remains possible.
Jake’s behavior after the incident mattered as much as the incident itself.
He could admit harm.
Or protect his image.
He chose image.
Meanwhile, Ethan changed direction.
After initially minimizing the slap, he requested another interview.
This time he admitted it.
“I hit her.”
No explanation.
Then he added:
“Jake didn’t make me.”
That surprised everyone.
Ethan was finally separating responsibility properly.
“He hyped me up. But I did it.”
