Chapter 10 - MY MOTHER AT THE STAIRS

The video did not show the full scene.

It began seconds before the push.

My mother stood behind me.

Derek blocked the hallway.

Margaret held the cane.

Walter watched from below.

Helen shoved me.

The simple image appeared conclusive.

Then audio restoration revealed Derek whispering, “Do it, or your husband dies tonight.”

My father had been held at the surgical center.

Derek showed Helen a live video on his phone.

My mother chose to push me rather than risk my father’s death.

She aimed toward the carpeted side of the staircase.

Derek moved me toward the marble after I lost balance.

Margaret struck my leg afterward.

My mother participated under coercion.

The law would consider that.

I considered the impact.

She still used her hands.

She still hid the truth after.

She still agreed to impersonate me at the board meeting.

Victim and participant.

Both.

Helen surrendered fully.

She gave prosecutors bank records, messages, and access codes.

She accepted charges for assault and fraud.

My father begged me to forgive her.

I refused to make forgiveness a family obligation.

The recording also cleared Walter of witnessing the original push from the upper landing. He saw only the fall and aftermath.

It did not clear his earlier crimes.

No person became innocent because another person was worse.

The grand jury indicted Derek, Margaret, Dr. Vale, Judge Morgan, Laura Vale, Michael, my parents, Walter, and several executives on different charges.

The public wanted simple villains.

The evidence showed a hierarchy of choices.

Margaret directed.

Derek enforced.

Michael transported.

Walter enabled.

My parents concealed.

Rebecca and Rachel manipulated procedure while trying to help.

Emma forged and later exposed.

Anna survived and organized.

The trial would have to hold complexity without losing accountability.

Then Caroline went into early labor.

The baby was delivered at thirty-four weeks.

A girl.

Caroline named her Grace Vale.

The artificial-womb twin was delivered two weeks later after equipment failure threatened her life.

The neutral guardian named her Hope for medical records.

DNA linked both girls to me and Walter.

The court asked whether I sought parental custody.

“No.”

The answer shocked reporters.

“I seek truthful records, medical access if appropriate, and the children’s right to decide future contact. I do not seek ownership.”

Caroline looked relieved.

Walter cried.

Margaret called me weak.

I understood weakness had become her word for anyone refusing control.

Sophie—no, there was no Sophie in this story. The thought came strangely, like a memory from another life.

The medication Laura injected had caused fragments of false recollection.

Dr. Reed warned me my testimony would be attacked.

I began documenting every memory with dates, corroboration, and uncertainty.

“I remember” became separate from “the evidence proves.”

That distinction made me stronger.

Then Anna asked to meet me privately.

She carried a birth certificate.

My name appeared as mother.

Child: Ethan Morgan.

Age: nine.

I had another child.

May you like

Born before my marriage to Derek.

Anna had raised him in secret.
