Chapter 3 - THE LAWYER ANNA HIRED

Rebecca admitted Anna contacted her eighteen months earlier through an encrypted email.

She provided evidence of forged guardianships, false medical reports, and asset transfers connected to the Morgan family.

Rebecca never met her in person.

She received instructions, recordings, and money through a legal trust.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Anna said disclosure would make Derek move against you faster.”

“He moved anyway.”

“Yes.”

Rebecca did not defend the secrecy.

She handed me the entire correspondence.

Anna had predicted the staircase attack.

Not the date.

The pattern.

First isolation.

Then psychiatric language.

Then injury.

Then guardianship.

Then financial transfer.

My marriage had followed the same progression as hers.

The recording in Derek’s car was part of Anna’s plan. She told Rebecca where I should hide the device. Rebecca gave me the recorder without explaining who designed the strategy.

Once again, someone had used my danger as proof.

The evidence might save me.

The secrecy still stole choice.

Hayes placed Rebecca under formal review but allowed her to remain as a witness.

A different attorney, federal prosecutor Rachel Sloan, entered the case.

Rebecca’s older sister.

The family connections never ended.

Rachel was not retained by me. She represented the federal investigation into Morgan Recovery.

She had spent three years building a case involving missing patients, forged competency reports, and unlawful transfers of property.

Anna’s emails gave her the first internal map.

My fall gave her probable cause.

The assault on my leg gave her evidence.

The system had waited for another woman to suffer visibly before acting.

Rachel acknowledged that directly.

“We failed to stop the pattern before it reached you.”

I appreciated the truth more than any promise.

Federal agents raided Morgan Recovery.

The main building appeared clean.

Patients had valid files.

Staff gave rehearsed answers.

Behind the rehabilitation wing, investigators found a sealed elevator leading underground.

The basement contained private rooms without windows, medication restraints, and identity files under false names.

One room held photographs of Anna over eight years.

She had lived there.

The final photograph showed her standing beside the same wheelchair seen in the hospital image.

She had regained the ability to walk.

Why use a wheelchair now?

Because the image was staged.

The written warning could have come from anyone.

The room also contained photographs of me taken throughout my marriage.

Derek had sent reports to Morgan Recovery every month.

My moods.

Friends.

Medical appointments.

Attempts to access money.

Anna’s file and mine were compared side by side.

The family treated wives as controlled subjects.

Investigators found no patients underground.

The rooms had been emptied hours before the raid.

A message remained on the central computer.

CLAIRE PRESSED PLAY. BEGIN TRANSFER TWO.

Rachel asked what Transfer Two meant.

Margaret refused to speak.

Derek asked for protective custody.

He feared his mother more than prison.

Walter began crying.

Then my phone received another video.

Anna stood inside a dark room.

This time she spoke.

“Claire, Walter is telling part of the truth.”

She lifted one hand.

A wedding ring hung from her fingers.

“He saw Derek push me.”

She turned the ring over.

An engraved date appeared inside.

The date of my wedding.

My ring had the same date.

“He didn’t tell you that he married me first.”

The video ended.

Walter Morgan was not only Derek’s father.

According to Anna, he had been her husband before Derek.
