Chapter 1

PART 1:

“You were never supposed to come here.”

Graham Ellison said it in front of three hundred wedding guests.

The string quartet stopped playing.

The bride froze beside the altar.

Crystal chandeliers glittered above the grand ballroom like nothing ugly had ever happened beneath them.

But everyone was staring at Claire.

She stood at the entrance in a pale pink dress, holding the hands of two small children.

Twins.

A little girl pressed close to her side.

A little boy stared at the groom with wide gray eyes.

Graham’s eyes.

Claire felt the entire room judging her before she took another breath.

The poor ex-wife.

The failed marriage.

The woman the Ellison family had whispered about for years.

Diane, Graham’s mother, stood from the front row in a silver dress and pearls.

Her smile was cold enough to make Claire remember every night she had cried alone in that family mansion.

“Still desperate after all these years?” Diane said.

A few guests looked away.

Others leaned closer.

They loved a scandal as long as it was not theirs.

Claire tightened her fingers around the children’s hands.

She had promised herself she would not shake.

Not today.

Not in front of them.

Graham stepped down from the altar, fury rising under his perfect wedding-day face.

“This is private.”

Claire looked past him at the bride.

Brielle stood pale and confused, her bouquet trembling in her hands.

Claire’s voice stayed calm.

“I didn’t come for you.”

Brielle looked from Claire to the children.

Then back to Graham.

“Who are they?”

Claire did not answer immediately.

The little boy lifted one hand and pointed at Graham.

His face was so much like the groom’s that silence spread through the room like spilled ink.

Same eyes.

Same chin.

Same expression when he was trying not to be scared.

Claire looked down at him.

He whispered, “Mommy… is that him?”

Graham went still.

Diane’s face turned white.

👉 But the old medical envelope in Claire’s hand held the truth Diane had buried for five years.
