Chapter 9

PART 9:

Graham looked wounded.

But Claire was done protecting him from pain he created.

“You don’t get their names as a reward for finally being forced to see them,” she said.

Graham lowered his head.

For the first time, the billionaire looked poor.

Not in money.

In character.

The guests began to leave.

Slowly.

Awkwardly.

Whispering into phones.

The wedding that was supposed to prove Graham had moved on became the day everyone learned what he left behind.

Outside the ballroom, Claire sat with the twins in a quiet side hall.

The attorney stood nearby, giving them space.

The little boy asked, “Is he bad?”

Claire closed her eyes.

That question was harder than any insult.

She pulled both children close.

“He made bad choices,” she said carefully. “And he hurt us. But grown-ups still have to tell the truth and fix what they break.”

The little girl whispered, “Do we have to go with him?”

Claire’s heart cracked.

“No, baby. Never unless you feel safe. I promise.”

Graham appeared at the end of the hallway.

He had removed his boutonniere.

His tie was loose.

He looked at the children, then at Claire.

“Can I talk to you?”

Claire stood.

“You can talk from there.”

He stopped several feet away.

Good.

He was learning distance.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

Claire’s face did not change.

“No, Graham. You’re shocked.”

He swallowed.

“That too.”

“You’re humiliated.”

“Yes.”

“You’re ashamed because everyone saw it.”

His eyes reddened.

“Yes.”

Claire held his gaze.

“Then start there. Don’t confuse public shame with remorse.”

He nodded slowly.

Behind him, Diane appeared.

Still proud.

Still poisonous.

“Graham,” she said sharply. “We are leaving.”

He did not turn around.

Diane’s voice hardened.

“Now.”

For the first time in his life, Graham did not obey.

May you like

“No.”

👉 And when Diane demanded loyalty, Graham finally said the word Claire had waited years to hear.
