Chapter 1

PART 1:
Emily lay motionless in the hospital bed with an oxygen tube beneath her nose and bruises fading yellow across one side of her face.
The monitor beside her blinked steadily.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
Her hands were hidden under a white blanket.
Her eyes were closed.
To everyone else, she looked like a woman who had not heard a word in nine days.
But her son knew better.
Ethan stood beside the bed in a pink hoodie, both hands gripping the edge of her blanket.
His eyes were red.
His voice was barely a breath.
“Mom… don’t open your eyes.”
Behind him, Ryan held a paper coffee cup and watched them like he was bored.
Not grieving.
Not scared.
Bored.
Ethan leaned closer to his mother’s face.
Ryan stepped forward and yanked the boy back by the shoulder of his hoodie.
Ethan stumbled, but he refused to let go of the blanket.
Ryan’s voice was low and cold.
“She can’t hear you, Ethan.”
Emily did not move.
But beneath the blanket, one finger twitched.
So small nobody else saw it.
Ethan did.
His eyes widened.
Then he quickly covered her hand with both of his.
He bent close to her ear.
“Dad is waiting for you to die.”
Ryan’s face tightened.
“What did you say?”
Ethan swallowed his tears and stood between his father and the bed.
His little body shook, but he did not move away.
“Mom, don’t move,” he whispered. “I already called someone.”
A hard knock hit the hospital room door.
Ryan froze.
His head snapped toward the hallway.
Ethan held his mother’s hand tighter under the blanket.
Then a woman’s voice came from outside the room.
Sharp.
Official.
Cold.
“Step away from her, Ryan.”

For the first time since Emily’s accident, Ryan looked afraid.
👉 But nine days earlier, Ryan had convinced everyone Emily’s injuries came from a tragic fall.
