Chapter 7
PART 7:
Ryan was arrested first.
Assault.
Fraud.
Forgery.
Attempted coercion.
Witness intimidation.
Emily’s sister was arrested later after investigators found deleted messages on her tablet and proof she had helped Ryan access Emily’s financial accounts.
When she was taken into custody, she cried.
Not for Emily.
For herself.
“She was always trying to turn people against me,” she told the officer.
The officer simply wrote it down.
By the time Emily left the hospital, Ryan’s name had been removed from all emergency contact lists.
The court granted a protective order.
Ethan refused to see him.
At the custody hearing, Ryan tried to look devastated.
He wore a gray suit and spoke softly.
“I love my son,” he said. “He’s confused. He’s been manipulated.”
Ethan sat beside Emily, holding her hand.
The judge asked if Ethan wanted to speak.
Emily whispered, “You don’t have to.”
Ethan nodded.
“I know.”
Then he stood.
He was small in that courtroom.
Still wearing a hoodie.
This one blue.
His voice shook.
But he spoke.
“My dad said Mom couldn’t hear me,” Ethan said. “But she could. And I could hear him too. I heard him say if she died, everything would be easier.”
Ryan’s face went blank.
Emily covered her mouth.
The courtroom went silent.
The judge leaned forward.
“Ethan, are you sure those were his words?”
Ethan nodded.
“He said it to my aunt in the hallway. He thought I was asleep.”
Emily’s sister stared at the table.
Ryan’s lawyer stopped writing.
That sentence did what no legal argument could.
It showed the room exactly what kind of man had been waiting beside Emily’s hospital bed.
Custody was suspended.
Supervised contact denied pending criminal proceedings.
The house was placed under legal protection so Ryan could not sell or borrow against it.
