Chapter 4

PART 4:

Ryan looked toward the hallway.

His first instinct was not to ask why police were there.

It was to look for Emily’s sister.

The detective noticed.

“Security is with her in the waiting area,” she said. “She’s not coming in.”

Ryan’s face went pale.

Ethan’s breath hitched.

The nurse walked to Emily’s side and checked the monitor.

Emily remained still.

But tears had begun leaking from the corners of her closed eyes.

The detective saw them.

So did Ryan.

His entire expression changed.

“She’s awake,” he whispered.

Ethan stepped closer to the bed.

The detective moved between Ryan and Emily.

“Mrs. Carter,” she said gently, “if you can hear me, you are safe. Do not try to speak. Just move one finger if you understand.”

For one long second, the whole room held its breath.

Then Emily’s finger moved beneath Ethan’s hands.

The nurse covered her mouth.

Ethan began to cry.

Ryan stepped backward.

“No,” he said. “No, that doesn’t mean anything.”

The detective turned to him.

“It means enough.”

Emily had married Ryan because he seemed steady.

That was what she told herself in the beginning.

He was not romantic in a movie way.

He was practical.

Responsible.

Organized.

He paid bills early.

He remembered appointments.

He showed up on time.

After years of being the younger sister who cleaned up everyone else’s mess, Emily mistook control for stability.

Her older sister had always been the golden one.

Pretty.

Confident.

Cruel in ways their family called “honest.”

When their parents died, Emily inherited the small house they had grown up in because she was the one who had cared for them.

Her sister never forgave her for that.

“That house should have been split,” she said.

“It was Mom and Dad’s decision,” Emily answered.

Her sister smiled.

“Because you made yourself look helpless.”

That sentence never left Emily.

Ryan entered her life during the worst of that grief.

He helped fix the porch.

He took Ethan to baseball practice.

He told Emily she didn’t have to fight alone anymore.

Within a year, they were married.

Within two, the house was in both their names.

Within three, Emily realized Ryan had never wanted to join her life.

He had wanted access to it.

👉 And once Ryan had access to the house, the money, and Emily’s trust, the real plan began.
