Chapter 3

PART 3:

On the third day, Ethan heard his aunt in the hallway.

“Ryan, you need to be patient. If she wakes up confused, we say she fell.”

Ryan answered, “And if she remembers?”

His aunt said, “She won’t. And if she does, no one believes a woman with a head injury over her husband and her sister.”

Ethan felt sick.

He wanted to tell a nurse.

But Ryan watched him closely.

Every time Ethan came near his mother, Ryan stood too close.

Every time Ethan tried to speak, Ryan interrupted.

“She needs quiet.”

“He’s emotional.”

“He’s just a kid.”

But on the ninth morning, Ethan saw the truth.

Emily’s finger moved.

Not from a machine.

Not from a reflex.

She moved when Ethan whispered, “I miss you.”

He froze.

Then he whispered, “Mom, can you hear me?”

Her finger twitched again.

Ethan almost screamed.

But then he saw Ryan in the reflection of the dark hospital TV screen.

Standing behind him.

Watching.

So Ethan did the smartest thing a scared child could do.

He pretended nothing had happened.

Then, when Ryan went to get coffee, Ethan took his own phone from his backpack.

The phone had no service plan.

But it could still call emergency numbers.

It could also call one saved contact over hospital Wi-Fi.

The woman his mother had told him to call if things ever felt wrong.

A domestic violence detective who had visited Emily once months earlier after a neighbor reported shouting from their house.

Emily had never pressed charges.

She had been afraid.

But she had saved the detective’s number under one word.

SAFE.

Ethan called.

He whispered everything.

The fall.

The basement.

His aunt.

His father.

His mother’s finger.

And the detective said, “Listen to me carefully. Do not let them know she’s awake. I’m coming.”

Now the detective stood outside the hospital room.

Ryan’s coffee cup trembled in his hand.

The door opened.

A female detective stepped inside with two hospital security officers and a nurse behind her.

She looked at Ethan first.

Then at Emily.

Then at Ryan.

“Move away from the bed.”

Ryan forced a laugh.

“What is this? My wife is in a coma.”

The detective’s eyes did not soften.

“Then you won’t mind stepping back.”

👉 But when Ryan looked toward the hallway instead of asking why police were there, the detective knew exactly who he was searching for.
