Chapter 8

PART 8:
The criminal case took months.
Emily healed slowly.
Some days she remembered more.
Some days she wished she didn’t.
Ethan stayed close, too close sometimes, watching her breathe when she slept.
One night, she woke and found him sitting on the floor by her bed.
“Baby,” she whispered. “Why aren’t you sleeping?”
He looked embarrassed.
“I just wanted to make sure.”
Emily’s heart broke.
She held out her hand.
He crawled into bed beside her like he had when he was little.
“I’m sorry you had to save me,” she whispered.
Ethan shook his head.
“You saved me first.”
She did not understand.
He looked up at her.
“You always told me if something feels wrong, tell someone safe.”
Emily closed her eyes.
She had.
She had said that so many times.
She just never imagined he would have to use it for her.
At trial, Ryan’s defense tried to paint the incident as an accident followed by panic.
Emily’s sister claimed she was only trying to “protect the family from scandal.”
Then prosecutors played the recording from Ethan’s emergency call.
His small voice whispering:
My mom moved her finger.
My dad hurt her.
Please come before he sees.
The courtroom listened.
Emily held Ethan’s hand.
Ryan looked straight ahead.
Her sister cried quietly, but no one moved to comfort her.
The jury convicted Ryan on the major charges.
Emily’s sister took a plea for conspiracy, fraud-related charges, and obstruction.
Ryan received prison time.
Her sister received a shorter sentence but lost any claim, access, or contact with Emily and Ethan.
The house remained Emily’s.
Not because of paperwork alone.
May you like
Because the truth finally stood inside it again.
👉 But returning home meant facing the basement stairs where everything had almost ended.
