Chapter 3

PART 3:
Brock stepped into the ring with gloves on and hate in his eyes.
The range officer raised one hand.
“Controlled demonstration. Three-minute round. Break on command. No strikes to the knee, throat, spine, or back of the head.”
Ava nodded once.
Brock did not.
The whistle blew.
Brock came at her immediately.
No testing.
No distance.
No respect.
He threw a hard right toward her jaw.
Ava slipped it by inches.
He followed with an elbow too sharp for a demonstration.
She stepped under it.
His knee came up toward her ribs.
She blocked it and felt the impact through her forearm.
The crowd reacted with a low sound.
Brock was trying to hurt her.
Everyone could see it now.
Ava did not strike back right away.
She moved.
Blocked.
Measured.
Let the cameras see.
Let the crowd understand.
Brock swung again.
She turned.
His fist cut through empty air.
He cursed under his breath.
“You scared?”
Ava’s eyes stayed flat.
“No.”
He lunged.
This time he aimed low.
A quick, dirty kick toward the side of her knee.
Exactly the kind of strike Okafor had forbidden.
Ava moved half a beat faster.
She caught his ankle.
The entire field froze.
Brock’s eyes widened.
Ava held his leg in both hands.
Dust moved around her boots.
She looked toward the nearest phone camera.
Then back at Brock.
“That one’s on video too.”
His face flushed.
He tried to pull free.
Ava stepped in, turned her hips, and swept his standing leg.
Brock hit the dirt hard.
The sound echoed across the yard.
Five hundred soldiers went silent.
Ava released him and stepped back.
She did not celebrate.
She did not raise her hands.
She only waited.
Brock rolled to one knee, breathing hard.
Humiliation burned across his face.
Okafor stepped forward.
“Round ends now.”
Brock ignored her.
He surged up and charged Ava from behind.
A dozen soldiers shouted.
Ava turned just enough.
She caught his arm.
Redirected his weight.
And drove him down again.
This time his face hit the dirt.
Hard.
Okafor’s voice cracked across the field.
“Stop!”
Brock tried to rise.
Two instructors moved in.
Okafor got there first.
She planted one boot near his hand.
“Stay down, Reynolds.”
The entire yard watched him freeze.
Ava stood a few feet away, breathing steady.
Her lip was split.
Dust covered one side of her face.
But her eyes were calm.
The range officer looked sick.
Okafor turned to him.
“You recorded the illegal strike?”
He nodded.
“Yes, Sergeant First Class.”
“And the attack after stop command?”
“Yes.”
Okafor looked toward the command tent.
“Bring the file.”
Brock lifted his head.
“What file?”
A captain stepped out of the tent carrying a sealed folder.
Brock’s face changed.
Ava saw it.
Fear.
The same fear she had seen in men when the door they thought was locked started opening from the other side.
Okafor took the folder.
“This evaluation was not only for Chief Hayes,” she said.
The field stayed silent.
May you like
“It was for you.”
👉 The sealed folder in Okafor’s hands was the one thing Brock never expected command to bring into daylight…
