Chapter 5

PART 5:
Okafor closed the folder.
“Sergeant Brock Reynolds, you are relieved of training authority pending investigation.”
Two military police officers entered the ring.
Brock stared at them.
Then at Ava.
“You think this makes you special?”
Ava wiped blood from her lip with her thumb.
“No.”
She looked at the soldiers around them.
“It makes them safer.”
The MPs took Brock by the arms.
He resisted for one second.
Then saw the cameras.
The witnesses.
Okafor.
The file.
Ava.
And he stopped.
As they led him away, no one saluted him.
No one defended him.
No one laughed.
The only sound was the crunch of his boots through the dirt.
After he was gone, the field stayed quiet.
Ava finally removed her mouthguard.
Okafor walked up to her.
“You all right, Chief?”
Ava nodded.
“Fine.”
Okafor looked at the blood on her lip.
“That’s a lie.”
Ava almost smiled.
“A small one.”
Okafor’s expression softened.
“Hannah wanted to be here.”
Ava’s face changed.
“She came?”
Okafor turned.
Near the back of the crowd, standing beside a medic, was Hannah Price.
Her right shoulder was still stiff.
Her posture was guarded.
But she was there.
Alive.
Watching.
Ava walked toward her.
The soldiers parted without being told.
When Ava reached Hannah, neither woman spoke at first.
Then Hannah looked past her toward the place Brock had fallen.
“He did it again,” Hannah whispered.
Ava nodded.
“Yes.”
Hannah’s eyes filled.
“But this time everyone saw.”
Ava’s throat tightened.
“Yes.”
Hannah covered her mouth as the tears came.
Ava stepped forward and hugged her carefully, avoiding the bad shoulder.
Around them, five hundred soldiers stood in silence.
No one mocked.
No one whispered.
No one looked away.
Because this was not weakness.
