Chapter 4

PART 4:

Brock swallowed.

Ava watched him carefully.

Okafor opened the folder.

“Six complaints in eighteen months. Intimidation. Discriminatory remarks. Retaliation. Illegal contact during drills. Two medical removals after unsanctioned strikes.”

Brock shook his head.

“Those were weak candidates.”

Ava finally stepped closer.

“No,” she said. “They were soldiers.”

His eyes snapped to her.

“You don’t know them.”

Ava reached into the pocket of her vest and pulled out a folded printout.

Hannah Price’s statement.

“I know one of them.”

Brock’s mouth tightened.

Ava held the paper up.

“She said you hit her after the whistle.”

Brock scoffed.

“She lost. That’s what people say when they can’t handle failure.”

Ava’s voice sharpened.

“She needed shoulder surgery.”

The crowd shifted.

Brock looked around.

The soldiers who had once feared him were now staring at him with something worse than anger.

Disgust.

Okafor nodded toward the big field monitor near the command tent.

The screen lit up.

First, it showed Hannah’s old video.

Grainy.

Shaky.

But clear enough.

Brock striking after the whistle.

Hannah falling.

The crowd silent.

Then the screen split.

Today’s footage appeared beside it.

Brock aiming at Ava’s knee.

Brock charging after the stop command.

The same pattern.

The same cruelty.

The same man.

Only this time, the target had not fallen.

Brock’s voice cracked.

“That proves nothing.”

Ava looked at him.

“It proves you didn’t change.”

Then another voice came from the crowd.

“I filed one of those complaints.”

Everyone turned.

A young sergeant stepped forward.

His face was pale.

But his voice held.

“He told me he’d end my career if I confirmed what happened to Price.”

Brock shouted, “Shut your mouth.”

Okafor snapped, “You will not speak.”

Another soldier stepped forward.

Then another.

“He told us women in combat were a liability.”

“He said if we defended them, we were weak too.”

“He laughed when Price couldn’t lift her arm.”

“He made us delete videos.”

“He said command would never pick us over him.”

The truth came out in pieces.

Then all at once.

Brock looked smaller with every statement.

Not because his body changed.

Because power built on fear collapses fast when fear moves to the other side.

Ava looked around the field.

Five hundred soldiers.

Dozens of phones.

Every camera still on.

This was why she had told them to keep recording.

Not for her pride.

For the soldiers who had been made to feel crazy.

For Hannah Price.

May you like

For every person told they did not belong by someone who needed them to believe it.

👉 Once the first soldier spoke, Brock’s entire wall of fear started cracking — and the next order ended his power in front of everyone…
