Chapter 1: The Punch in the NICU

Chapter 1: The Punch in the NICU
“You called my great-grandchildren runts?”
The words came after the punch.
Daniel never saw the old man coming.
One second, he was standing beside the NICU incubators in his black suit, holding divorce papers like they were a weapon.
The next, his face snapped sideways.
The papers fell from his hand and scattered across the sterile floor beside the babies’ glass beds.
The NICU monitors kept beeping.
Soft.
Tiny.
Terrifying.
Inside two incubators, Audrey’s premature twins lay wrapped in white-and-blue blankets, wires taped gently to their small chests.
Audrey sat beside them in a hospital chair, pale from blood loss, still swollen from emergency surgery, her hair tangled around her face.
She had one hand on the edge of her son’s blanket.
The other held her phone so tightly her knuckles looked white.
Behind Daniel stood Rachel.
Pregnant.
Wearing a pale maternity coat.
One hand on her belly.
Her face frozen in shock.
Daniel stumbled back half a step and grabbed his cheek.
“Who the hell are you?”
The old man stood straight in a dark blue military dress uniform covered in medals.
Silver hair.
Hard eyes.
Three uniformed men stood behind him, silent and still.
Audrey finally lifted her face.
Tears ran down her cheeks, but her voice was steady.
“My family.”
Daniel stared at her.
For months, he had called her alone.
Poor.
Weak.
Lucky he had ever married her.
Now the room had changed around him.
Audrey pointed slowly at Rachel’s coat.
Rachel flinched and pulled the front closed.
Audrey’s voice was quiet.
“That coat was made for my babies.”
Daniel looked from the coat to the incubators.
Then back to Audrey.
And for the first time since he walked into the NICU, he understood that she already knew everything.
The NICU doors opened hard behind them.
Two hospital security officers entered with a dark-suited lawyer carrying a sealed file.
The old man stepped between Daniel and the incubators.
He pointed toward the door.
“Seal the NICU.”
Daniel went still when he saw the stamp on the file.

Because the secret he thought was buried had arrived before he could bury Audrey with it.
👉 But two weeks earlier, Audrey had gone into labor alone while Daniel was hiding a life he thought she would never uncover.
