Chapter 10: The Fighters She Brought Home

Chapter 10: The Fighters She Brought Home
That afternoon, Audrey walked the twins past the NICU doors.
For a moment, she remembered the cold room.
The glass incubators.
Daniel’s voice.
The divorce papers sliding to the floor.
The coat Rachel had stolen.
The punch that had shattered the lie.
Then one of the twins reached up from the stroller and wrapped tiny fingers around hers.
Audrey stopped.
Her grandfather stood beside her.
“You ready to go home?” he asked.
Audrey looked down at her babies.
Home was no longer a man’s permission.
No longer a house where she had to be grateful for crumbs.
No longer a marriage where betrayal wore a suit and called itself responsibility.
Home was two babies breathing.
A grandfather who came when called.
A future protected by truth.
Audrey nodded.
“Yes,” she said. “We’re ready.”
Daniel had believed she had no family.
No money.
No one powerful enough to stand between him and what he wanted.
He was wrong about all of it.
But most of all, he was wrong about Audrey.
She had not been weak in that NICU.
She had been recovering from bringing two fighters into the world.
And when the time came, she became one too.

ENDING QUESTION:
If you were Audrey, would you ever allow Daniel to rebuild a relationship with the twins, or did calling them “runts” in the NICU prove he never deserved to be their father?
