The lawyer pulled a document from the file.
“Mrs. Daniel has retained counsel. Any document presented to her while she is under postpartum medical care and without independent representation will be challenged. Additionally, we have already filed emergency motions regarding custody, medical decision-making authority, and asset control.”
Daniel laughed once.
“You filed what?”
The lawyer looked at Audrey.
“With her permission.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“You called them?”
Audrey held up her phone.
“I recorded you.”
The NICU seemed to freeze.
Daniel looked at the phone like it had betrayed him.
Audrey pressed play.
His own voice filled the sterile room.
“You’re going to sign today.”
“With what money?”
“Those babies are runts.”
“They’re a complication.”
A nurse near the incubators wiped her eyes.
Rachel looked down.
Daniel’s face hardened.
“That’s out of context.”
Audrey’s grandfather stepped closer.
“No. That is exactly who you are.”
The lawyer handed a copy of the emergency filing to hospital security.
“Until the court reviews the matter, Daniel is to be removed from the NICU except under supervised access approved by hospital administration and counsel. Rachel has no legal relationship to these infants and is not permitted near them.”
Rachel’s head snapped up.
“But I’m carrying his child.”
Audrey looked at her.
“Then protect that baby from becoming another excuse for him to hurt someone.”
Rachel flinched.
For the first time, the confidence left her face completely.
Daniel pointed at Audrey.
“You think your little military family scares me?”
The three uniformed men behind her grandfather stepped forward one pace.
Not touching him.
Not threatening him.
Just standing.
The old man’s voice dropped.
“We are not here to scare you. We are here to make sure you never get another chance to corner her alone.”
The police arrived minutes later.
Not with sirens.
Not with drama.
Quietly.
Professionally.
They took statements from Audrey, the nurses, hospital security, and the lawyer.
Daniel tried to present himself as the reasonable one.
A stressed father.
A man overwhelmed by premature birth.
A husband dealing with a fragile wife.
Then the nurse described Audrey sitting alone for days while Daniel ignored medical calls.
Hospital records showed he had refused to sign certain NICU consent updates until Audrey agreed to discuss divorce terms.
Security footage showed Rachel entering restricted areas after Daniel signed her in as “family.”
Audrey’s recording filled in the rest.
Daniel was escorted out.
Rachel followed, no longer wearing the stolen coat.
As they passed the incubators, Rachel looked once at the twins.
Not with cruelty this time.
With fear.
