Chapter 5: The Recording Beside the Glass Beds

Chapter 5: The Recording Beside the Glass Beds
The next morning, Daniel came back with Rachel.
He had his own attorney on speakerphone.
He stood beside the incubators like he was inspecting damaged merchandise.
Audrey sat in the chair, phone in her lap, recording.
Daniel dropped a new stack of papers onto her knees.
“You’re going to sign today.”
“I’m not signing anything without a lawyer.”
He smiled.
“With what money?”
Rachel gave a small laugh.
Audrey looked at the twins.
Daniel leaned closer.
“You need to be realistic. Those babies are runts. They’re going to need expensive care for years. You can’t handle that.”
Audrey’s eyes filled.
Rachel touched her belly.
“At least some children come when they’re ready.”
Audrey’s breath caught.
Daniel saw the pain and pushed harder.
“Look at them. You think love pays NICU bills?”
Audrey whispered, “They’re your children.”
Daniel shrugged.
“They’re a complication.”
That was the moment the door opened.
Her grandfather walked in.
And the first thing he did was hear Daniel say, “runts.”
The second thing he did was hit him.
Now, in the NICU, hospital security stood at the door while the lawyer opened the sealed file.
The old man’s punch had shocked the room, but his voice was controlled now.
Military controlled.
Courtroom controlled.
The kind of calm that made people stop lying.
Daniel touched his cheek and glared.
“You assaulted me.”
The old man looked at him.
“You abandoned my granddaughter after surgery, tried to coerce her into signing legal documents under medical distress, and insulted two premature infants in intensive care.”
Daniel sneered.
“That doesn’t make you law enforcement.”
The lawyer stepped forward.
“No. That’s why I’m here.”
Rachel tried to move toward the door.
One of the hospital security officers shifted just enough to block her path.
She stopped.
Audrey looked at the coat.
“Take it off.”
Rachel’s face flushed.
“What?”
Audrey’s voice trembled, but she did not look away.
“That coat was made for my babies. Take it off.”
Daniel snapped, “Audrey, don’t be ridiculous.”
Her grandfather turned his head slightly.
Daniel went quiet.
Rachel slowly unbuttoned the coat.
Underneath, her hands shook against her own pregnant belly.
A nurse stepped forward and took the coat carefully, as if it were evidence.

Because now it was.
👉 And when Audrey pressed play, Daniel’s own voice turned the NICU into a courtroom.
