After the door closed, Audrey finally broke.
Her body folded forward as much as her incision allowed.
Her grandfather was beside her in an instant.

“I’m here now,” he said.
Audrey sobbed.
“I should have called sooner.”
He shook his head.
“No. He should have never made you afraid to call.”
The twins remained in the NICU for six long weeks.

The courtroom heard Daniel’s words.
“Those babies are runts.”
“They’re a complication.”
The judge looked at Daniel for a long time.
“Are you referring to the two infants currently receiving intensive medical care?”
Daniel swallowed.
“I was under stress.”
Audrey’s grandfather sat behind her in uniform again.
Not for intimidation.
For remembrance.
The judge turned to Audrey.
“You are recovering from major surgery while caring for premature twins?”
“Yes, Your Honor.”
“And these documents were presented to you in the NICU?”
“Yes.”
The judge’s expression hardened.
Daniel lost temporary leverage that day.
He was ordered to provide full medical support.
The twins’ care was protected.
Audrey was granted exclusive use of the family home during recovery, though she chose to stay with her grandfather instead.
