Chapter 1

PART 1:

Ethan Vance stood in the middle of the marble lobby with his sleeping daughter on one shoulder and a crushed bouquet of red roses in his hand.

His coat was wrinkled.

His shoes were dusty from the cemetery path.

One rose petal had fallen onto the polished hotel floor.

Behind the front desk, Patricia looked him up and down like he had stepped in from the wrong world.

Then she smiled coldly.

“You’d be better off at a cheap motel.”

The lobby went quiet.

A couple near the gold elevators turned around.

A man in a suit lowered his phone.

A woman holding a shopping bag whispered something to her friend.

Ethan did not answer right away.

He only shifted his daughter gently so her cheek rested more comfortably against his shoulder.

She was four years old.

Still asleep.

Still clutching the tiny stuffed rabbit her mother had given her before the hospital took its final turn.

Ethan looked back at Patricia.

“I have a reservation.”

Patricia’s eyes dropped to the roses.

Then to his worn duffel bag.

Then to the little girl’s sneakers, one of them untied.

Before Patricia could respond, Karla stepped closer from the side of the desk.

She worked in guest relations, dressed in a sharp black blazer, with a name tag bright enough to catch every chandelier light.

She folded her arms and laughed under her breath.

“Not in a hotel like this.”

A few guests looked away, embarrassed for him.

Others kept watching.

That was the part Ethan hated most.

Not the insult.

The audience.

His daughter stirred against his neck.

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Please keep your voice down. She’s asleep.”

Patricia leaned back.

“Sir, this is a five-star property. We can’t just give rooms to people who walk in with flowers and a story.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

But he did not yell.

He did not curse.

He had promised himself he would not let anger be the memory his daughter carried from this day.

He looked down at the damaged roses.

Then he slowly pointed toward the computer screen in front of Patricia.

“Check the executive system.”

Patricia froze.

Just for half a second.

Karla’s smile weakened.

“The what?” Patricia asked.

May you like

“The executive system,” Ethan said. “Not the front desk list.”

👉 But when Patricia typed his name into the wrong screen, she had no idea the real alert had already reached the back office.
