Chapter 2

PART 2:

Patricia stared at Ethan as if he had said something impossible.

Only board members, ownership guests, and high-security reservations used that system.

People like Ethan, at least the way he looked that afternoon, did not know it existed.

Karla leaned toward the monitor, suddenly less confident.

Patricia typed his last name.

Vance.

Nothing appeared on the regular guest screen.

Her smile returned.

“I don’t see you.”

Ethan’s voice stayed calm.

“You’re in the wrong system.”

Before Patricia could make another remark, footsteps came quickly from the hallway behind the desk.

The General Manager appeared, moving fast, his face already tense.

Someone from the back office must have heard the name.

Or seen it on the internal alert.

The moment he saw Ethan standing there, with the sleeping child and the crushed roses, the color drained from his face.

He looked at Patricia.

Then at Karla.

Then back at Ethan.

“Why is Mr. Vance still standing in the lobby?”

No one spoke.

Patricia’s lips parted.

Karla’s arms slowly fell to her sides.

Ethan held his daughter tighter.

His face was quiet.

But his eyes were cold.

Thirty minutes earlier, Ethan had almost turned the car around.

Not because he was afraid of the hotel.

Because every mile closer to it felt like driving straight into a memory he was not ready to touch.

The hotel had been his wife’s favorite place in the city.

Not because it was expensive.

Not because of the chandeliers or the champagne bar or the marble floors.

She loved it because, years ago, when they were young and broke, Ethan had brought her there for coffee in the lobby after saving tips for two weeks.

They had sat near the window with one shared dessert and pretended they belonged.

She had laughed when he apologized for not being able to afford a room.

“One day,” she had said, touching his hand, “we’ll come back for real.”

👉 But Ethan had not returned to that hotel for luxury — he came back because of a promise his daughter accidentally uncovered that morning.
