Chapter 4

PART 4:

Patricia’s face flushed.

“Sir, I—I didn’t realize—”

Ethan looked at her.

“That I had money?”

The words landed across the lobby.

Patricia swallowed.

Karla looked down.

The General Manager turned sharply toward both women.

“What happened?”

No one answered.

So Ethan did.

“I came in with my daughter asleep on my shoulder. I gave my name. I said I had a reservation. Your receptionist told me I’d be better off at a cheap motel. Then your guest relations associate said, ‘Not in a hotel like this.’”

The General Manager closed his eyes for one second.

When he opened them, the professional warmth was gone.

“Patricia. Karla. Step away from the desk.”

Patricia’s voice cracked.

“Sir, please, I didn’t know who he was.”

Ethan let out a humorless breath.

“That is exactly the problem.”

His daughter shifted again.

Her tiny hand tightened around his collar.

The General Manager lowered his voice.

“Mr. Vance, may I escort you to the private lounge? We have the family suite prepared.”

Ethan shook his head.

“I asked for the executive system because I wanted the reservation confirmed. Not because I wanted special treatment.”

The General Manager nodded.

“Of course.”

But Patricia could not stop herself.

Her fear made her careless.

“Mr. Vance, I truly apologize. If you had just explained—”

Ethan turned to her fully.

“If I had explained what? That my wife died? That my daughter cried herself to sleep before we got here? That these flowers are for a woman who loved this hotel before anyone here knew my name?”

Patricia’s eyes filled with panic.

The lobby was silent now.

No whispers.

No laughter.

Just the soft sound of Ethan’s daughter breathing against his shoulder.

Karla whispered, “We didn’t mean—”

“You meant enough,” Ethan said.

Then the General Manager said the sentence that changed everything.

“Mr. Vance is not only a guest.”

Patricia’s face went blank.

Karla looked up.

The General Manager continued, his voice tight.

“He is the incoming majority owner of this hotel group. The ownership transfer became active this morning.”

👉 The man they tried to push out of the lobby had just become the person who owned it.
