Chapter 3

PART 3:

They did come back.

For their first anniversary.

Then their fifth.

Then the night they found out they were having a daughter.

The roses had always been part of it.

Red roses for love.

One white rose for hope.

That was her rule.

After she died, Ethan stopped going.

The hotel became a locked room inside his chest.

But that morning, his daughter had found an old photo in a drawer.

Her mother in a blue dress.

Ethan beside her.

A bouquet on the table.

The hotel lobby glowing behind them.

“Daddy,” she asked, “is this where Mommy smiled?”

Ethan could not breathe for a second.

Then he nodded.

“Yes, sweetheart.”

“Can we bring her flowers there?”

That was why he came.

Not to show off.

Not to make a scene.

Not to claim anything.

He came because grief had taught him that promises did not disappear just because one person was gone.

He had gone to the cemetery first.

The rain from the night before had turned the path soft and muddy.

His daughter had fallen asleep in the car after crying quietly into her rabbit.

The roses had gotten crushed between the car seat and his coat.

Ethan almost went home.

But then he remembered his wife’s voice.

One day, we’ll come back for real.

So he drove to the hotel.

What Patricia did not know was that Ethan had more than a reservation.

He had a history.

And buried inside that history was the reason the General Manager now looked like he had just watched a disaster happen in real time.

“Mr. Vance,” the General Manager said carefully, stepping around the desk. “I am so sorry. I was not informed you had arrived.”

Ethan glanced at Patricia.

May you like

“You were informed,” he said. “Your desk was not interested.”

👉 And when Ethan repeated exactly what Patricia and Karla had said, the whole lobby finally understood what they had done.
