Chapter 6

PART 6:

Karla’s face crumpled.

“I’m sorry. I thought—”

Ethan cut her off.

“You thought my coat made me less human.”

Karla’s mouth closed.

The General Manager turned to security.

“Please escort them to HR. They are suspended pending investigation.”

Patricia’s shoulders dropped.

Karla started crying, but quietly, because the lobby was still watching.

Ethan did not enjoy it.

Justice did not always feel good.

Sometimes it just felt necessary.

His daughter finally woke as the elevator doors opened.

She lifted her head, sleepy and confused.

“Daddy?”

Ethan’s expression softened instantly.

“I’m here.”

She looked around at the chandeliers.

“Is this Mommy’s smiling place?”

For the first time all day, Ethan almost broke.

He kissed her forehead.

“Yeah,” he whispered. “This is Mommy’s smiling place.”

The General Manager looked down.

Even he had to turn away for a second.

Upstairs, the private ballroom was filled with white flowers and quiet music.

A framed photo of Ethan’s wife stood near the front.

No giant portrait.

No dramatic display.

Just the picture his daughter had found that morning.

The one in the blue dress.

The one where she was laughing in the lobby like the world had been kind to her.

Ethan carried his daughter to the memorial table.

She placed the white rose in a small glass vase.

Then Ethan laid the crushed red roses beside it.

“They got hurt,” his daughter whispered.

Ethan nodded.

“They still made it.”

She leaned her head against him.

“Like us?”

Ethan closed his eyes.

May you like

“Yeah, sweetheart. Like us.”

👉 That evening, Ethan stood before the hotel board — but he did not begin with money, business, or profit.
