Chapter 2

PART 2:

Dominic froze.

His mother lowered her wine glass.

His father muted the television.

The front door burst open.

Two police officers rushed through the living room and into the kitchen.

One grabbed Dominic, twisted his arms behind his back, and forced him away from his wife.

The other officer dropped to one knee beside her.

Dominic thrashed.

“What the hell is this?”

The officer held him hard against the counter.

“Domestic violence,” he said. “We saw enough.”

Dominic’s mother covered her mouth.

His father stood up too late.

On the floor, his wife lifted her tear-streaked face.

Her hand was shaking.

Her body was still in pain.

But her eyes had changed.

For the first time in that house, Dominic looked afraid of her.

Not because she had screamed.

Because she had survived long enough to be believed.

Three years earlier, she had mistaken Dominic’s control for protection.

That was how it started.

He made decisions quickly.

He ordered confidently.

He spoke to waiters, bankers, contractors, and strangers like the whole world was a room he owned.

When he loved her, it felt powerful.

When he chose her, it felt safe.

She had grown up with uncertainty, moving between relatives who treated her like a favor they were tired of doing.

Dominic came with a name, a house, a family, and a promise.

“With me, you’ll never have to worry again,” he told her.

She believed him.

At the wedding, his mother smiled in the front row with wet eyes and a diamond brooch on her chest.

Later, during the reception, she touched the bride’s cheek and said, “Dominic needs a wife who understands discipline.”

The young bride laughed softly, thinking it was a strange old-fashioned joke.

May you like

It was not a joke.

👉 What first looked like protection slowly became a cage with Dominic holding every key.
